# Kaveo — the guide (full text) # Kaveo ## Kaveo documentation URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/ Kaveo is a media player with a built-in library: it plays your local files and can connect to servers like Jellyfin, but it also works as a plain, fast player — open a file and it plays. This guide is organised by what you are trying to do. - [Getting started](getting-started/index.md) — your first minutes with Kaveo. - [Your library](library/index.md) — browse, organise and correct the titles Kaveo finds, and look at your own photos and videos. - [Watching](watching/index.md) — the player, next episode, skipping, screenshots and HDR output. - [Subtitles](subtitles/index.md) — load, sync, edit and translate them. - [Sources](sources/index.md) — where your titles come from. - [Organizing files](organizing/index.md) — naming, imports, and several copies of a title. - [Private titles](private/index.md) — keep titles and photos encrypted and out of the library until you unlock them. - [From your file manager](file-manager.md) — play or file a video, or open a photo, with a right-click. - [Command line](command-line.md) — start Kaveo on a file, a photo or a folder from a terminal. - [Keyboard shortcuts](keyboard-shortcuts.md) — every key and mouse button the player answers to. - [Settings](settings/index.md) — a reference page for each section of the settings screen. - [Troubleshooting](troubleshooting.md) — the messages Kaveo shows, and what to send when you report a problem. - [Credits](credits.md) — the people and projects whose work appears in these pages. --- ## From your file manager URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/file-manager/ ## What it is for Kaveo can add itself to your desktop, so a file you have just downloaded is one right-click from playing or being filed into your library. ![The File manager integration row at the foot of Settings › Interface: its switch off, and the note that it applies at once](images/file-manager/file-manager-settings.webp) ## How to use it 1. Turn on **File manager integration** in **Settings › Interface** ([Interface](settings/interface.md)). It acts at once. 2. Open a video, a track, a photo or a [playlist](library/playlists.md) with Kaveo, or pick **Add to Kaveo's queue** from its **Kaveo** submenu — see [Next episode and queue](watching/next-episode.md). 3. From that submenu, **Add to Movies (move)** files it into a category and renames it to match your library; **Add to Movies (link, keep the original)** leaves the original where it is. 4. On a folder, **Play this folder with Kaveo** plays its files in order, **Loop this folder with Kaveo** repeats them, and **Add to** files the whole folder. ## Good to know - A photo opens in the [viewer](library/view-photos.md); the submenu is for videos and folders. - The **Kaveo** submenu comes from KDE: Dolphin shows it, GNOME Files and Thunar do not, though opening a file with Kaveo still works there. - If Kaveo moves or is installed again, turn the setting back on. Turning it off removes everything it added, and never makes Kaveo your default player. - Filing happens at once; Kaveo asks only about an overwrite. Only categories that accept films or series are offered. A video in a personal category's folder still gets them, but Kaveo refuses and says why. --- ## Command line URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/command-line/ ## What it is for Start Kaveo from a terminal. ## How to use it 1. Give Kaveo a path: it plays a video, or shows a photo. ``` kaveo "Big Buck Bunny.mkv" ``` 2. Give it a web address — a stream or a video page — and it plays. ``` kaveo https://example.com/film.m3u8 ``` 3. Add `--play-folder`, and it plays every video in that folder, in file-name order. ``` kaveo --play-folder "Season 1" ``` 4. Add `--enqueue`, and the file joins the running Kaveo's queue, or plays if none runs. ``` kaveo --enqueue "Season 1/Episode 2.mkv" ``` 5. Add `--translate`, and the files and folders you name join the translation queue; nothing plays. ``` kaveo --translate "Season 1" "Film (2016).mkv" ``` 6. Add `--loop`, and a video, folder or playlist plays [over and over](watching/loop.md), even after a restart; `--fullscreen` starts it, or a file, full screen. ``` kaveo --loop --fullscreen "Shop music" ``` 7. With Kaveo closed, `--restore` and a [backup](settings/backup.md) file restore it before Kaveo opens. ``` kaveo --restore "kaveo-backup-2026-10-08-1200.zip" ``` ## Good to know - Only the first Kaveo owns your library, history and settings. A second one brings that window forward; given a file, it plays it and reports where you stopped; given a web address, that window plays it. - Translating asks nothing; **Already translated** decides. - `kaveo --version` prints the version. There is no help option, and an unknown option is ignored. - Everything but translating is also in your file manager's **Kaveo** menu — see [From your file manager](file-manager.md). --- ## Keyboard shortcuts URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/keyboard-shortcuts/ ## What it is for These work while a video is playing, and every one of them can be changed — see [Shortcuts](settings/shortcuts.md), which lists one fewer on Linux. | What it does | Default shortcut | |---|---| | Play / Pause | **Space** | | Seek forward 10 s | **→**, **Mouse Fwd**, **Wheel →** | | Seek backward 10 s | **←**, **Mouse Back**, **Wheel ←** | | Frame step forward | **.** | | Frame step backward | **,** | | Speed up | **]** | | Speed down | **[** | | Volume up | **↑**, **=**, **Wheel ↑** | | Volume down | **↓**, **-**, **Wheel ↓** | | Mute | **M** | | Cycle audio track | **A** | | Cycle subtitle track | **S** | | Toggle statistics overlay | **I** | | Reset statistics | **R** | | Stats: next page | **Tab** | | Toggle fullscreen | **F**, **F11**, **Enter**, **Enter (num)**, **Wheel Click** | | Toggle exclusive fullscreen (Mode 1) | **Shift+F** | | Audio delay −50 ms | **K** | | Audio delay +50 ms | **L** | | Subtitle delay −50 ms | **Z** | | Subtitle delay +50 ms | **X** | | Subtitle delay −500 ms | **Shift+Z** | | Subtitle delay +500 ms | **Shift+X** | | Zoom in | — | | Zoom out | — | | Reset picture placement | — | | Toggle pan and scan (fill the screen) | — | | Subtitle editor | **E** | | Save frame | **Shift+S** | | Copy frame | **Ctrl+C** | | Edit a copy | **T** | Six more keys cannot be changed: - **Esc** leaves fullscreen, on any screen; otherwise it goes back — in the player to where the film was started from, on a library page one step up its path. - **Ctrl+O** opens **Open file…**, and **Ctrl+L** opens **Open URL…**, on any screen. - **/** puts the cursor in the search field. - **F12** saves a picture of what is on screen — see [Screenshots](watching/screenshots.md). - **Ctrl+H** opens the live picture panel while a film plays. ## Good to know - The four actions with a dash have no shortcut until you give them one. - A shortcut can be a mouse button or a wheel notch as readily as a key, so some rows carry both. - The two delays are also in the player's right-click menu, under **Audio** › **Audio delay** and **Subtitles** › **Timing**. - **Toggle exclusive fullscreen (Mode 1)** has no Settings row outside Windows, where **Shift+F** is ordinary fullscreen, like **F**. - Photos have keys of their own — see [Viewing photos](library/view-photos.md). - While the subtitle editor is open it takes **[**, **]**, **↑** and **↓**: retime the line and move between lines. - While the video editor (*Edit a copy*) is open it takes **I** and **O**: mark where the copy starts and ends. --- ## Troubleshooting URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/troubleshooting/ ## What it is for Kaveo says what went wrong in the top-right corner of any screen, and helps report it. ## How to use it 1. A message that **flashes** is something that just happened, such as a file that would not open. Click it, or leave it six seconds; a repeat becomes one message with a count. 2. A message that **stays** means something switched itself off for the video you are watching, and appears with the playback controls. 3. Click the copy icon on either one to copy its full text. 4. Raise **Detail level** under **Settings › Diagnostics**, do the thing that failed again, then set it back — see [Diagnostics](settings/diagnostics.md). 5. Click **Export a diagnostic bundle** there for one file to send, then **Report a problem…** in **Settings › About**, which opens the report form already filled in — see [About](settings/about.md). ## Good to know - A message that stays has no close button: it is the only statement of what is broken, and it goes when the problem clears or you leave the video. - *…the graphics card ran out of memory*: follow the message's own remedy. - Text drawn as empty rectangles is a missing font. Install a Japanese one — *fonts-noto-cjk* on Debian or Ubuntu, *noto-fonts-cjk* on Arch — which covers Chinese and Korean too, then start Kaveo again. - A video opened while Kaveo is already running plays in a second window with no library of its own; the first window keeps it — see [Command line](command-line.md). --- ## Credits URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/credits/ ## What it is for The demo library used for this guide's screenshots is built entirely from openly licensed work. You receive it by email. ![The licence screen: Enter your Kaveo licence key, a field for the key, and Activate, Get a key and Quit](../images/getting-started/licence.webp) ## How to use it 1. Copy the whole key, which starts with KAVEO1-, and paste it into the field. 2. Click **Activate**. 3. **Settings › About** shows who the licence is for and until when; **Change key…** enters a new one. ## Good to know - In its last week, a small badge in the top bar and one message say when it ends. - When it ends, Kaveo shows only this screen until a new key is entered. A film you are watching plays to its end first. Nothing is deleted. - Kaveo confirms the date online at least once a week. Without a connection for longer, or with the clock set back, it asks you to connect once and click **Try again**. - To ask for a key, click **Get a key**. --- ## First launch URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/getting-started/first-launch/ ## What it is for The first time Kaveo runs there is nothing to show yet — this is how you point it at your films and shows, or just play one file with no library at all. ![Kaveo's library screen on a first launch, with no folder added yet and an Add a folder button](../images/getting-started/first-launch-empty.webp) ## How to use it 1. Installed from a package, Kaveo first asks for its [licence key](licence.md), then shows **Welcome to Kaveo**: what is worth a look on this computer, and two ticked boxes, for the right-click menu and a terminal command. Untick either, then click **Continue**. ![The Welcome to Kaveo dialog, listing what is worth a look, with Open Components, the two ticked boxes and Continue](../images/getting-started/first-launch-welcome.webp) 2. With nothing added, the library screen says **Your library is empty** — click **Add a folder**. 3. That opens **Settings › Library › Folders**; click **Add folder…** and choose your films' folder. 4. Click **Save** — titles appear within seconds, and a large folder is refined for a minute after. 5. Repeat for another folder, or split your library into kinds first — see [Categories](../library/categories.md). ![Settings, Library, Folders, with the Add folder button and no folders yet](../images/getting-started/first-launch-folders.webp) ## Good to know - Drag a video onto the Kaveo window, or click **Open** › **Open file…** in the top bar, to play it right away — no library folder needed. Kaveo never becomes your default video player; its place in your file manager's right-click menu is the box you ticked or not — see [From your file manager](../file-manager.md). - A folder can be removed later from the same page; nothing on disk is touched — see [Local folders](../sources/local-folders.md) for what that page does. - See [The library home](../library/home.md) for what the rows and the featured band do once titles appear. --- ## A tour of the interface URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/getting-started/interface-tour/ ## What it is for A map of the screens this guide keeps pointing at. ## The top bar ![The left half of the Kaveo top bar: the logo and the category strip, numbered 1 and 2](../images/getting-started/interface-tour-topbar-left.webp) ![The right half of the Kaveo top bar: the search field through the avatar, numbered 3 to 8](../images/getting-started/interface-tour-topbar-right.webp) 1. The logo — back home, with every filter cleared. 2. Categories — your library's places; see [Categories](../library/categories.md). 3. Search — see [Search](../library/search.md). 4. **Open** — a file outside your library, or a URL (**Ctrl+L**). 5. The vault padlock — see [Private titles](../private/index.md). 6. Sources — see [Sources](../sources/index.md). 7. Settings — see [Settings](../settings/index.md). 8. Your avatar. ## The library home ![The library home, with the featured band and its rows](../images/getting-started/interface-tour-home.webp) Rows of titles under a featured band; click a card to open it — a genre or saga row's own title opens everything in it — see [The library home](../library/home.md). ## A title page ![A film's own page, with its poster, description and genres](../images/getting-started/interface-tour-title.webp) Poster, description, genres, cast, similar titles. **⋯** › **Correct match…** fixes a bad match — see [Correcting a wrong match](../library/correct-a-match.md). More than one copy? The row under **Play** lists them — see [Several copies](../organizing/versions.md). A series' page starts with **Play** or **Resume**; an episode plays from its picture. Above it, the path back: click a step, or the arrow. ## The player ![The player with the playback bar showing the timeline and the playback controls](../images/getting-started/interface-tour-player.webp) Move the mouse to bring up the bar: seek, play or pause, chapters, tracks, speed, volume, fullscreen — see [Player controls](../watching/player-controls.md). A right-click opens its More menu. ## Good to know - Press **F12** anywhere for a picture of what's on screen — see [Screenshots](../watching/screenshots.md). - Type in the search field, or click a genre or saga row's own title, to narrow the grid to one thing. --- # Your library ## Your library URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/library/ Everything Kaveo finds in your folders and on your servers — browse it, organise it, correct it. - [The library home](home.md) — the featured band, the rows, and new files. - [The card menu](title-menu.md) — quick actions from a right-click on a title's card. - [Trailers](trailers.md) — play a trailer, and choose its quality and language. - [Search and genres](search.md) — find a title, or narrow to one genre. - [Artists](artists.md) — browse music by artist. - [Artist pictures](artist-pictures.md) — their sources. - [Album information](album-information.md) — and covers. - [Editing music tags](edit-tags.md) — loudness too. - [Playlists](playlists.md) — your own lists of songs. - [Podcasts](podcasts.md) — shows you follow by their feed. - [Categories](categories.md) — split the library into places of your own. - [Genres and tags](tags.md) — correct a title's genres and its tags. - [Hiding adult content](adult-content.md) — keep adult titles out of sight. - [Correcting a wrong match](correct-a-match.md) — fix a wrongly matched title. - [File info](file-info.md) — what a file says about itself. - [Collections](collections.md) — group the films and series of one saga. - [Missing episodes](missing-episodes.md) — and what is coming. - [Metadata files](metadata-files.md) — the NFO files of other media tools. - [Your own photos and videos](personal-videos.md) — phone and camera shots, kept apart. - [Viewing photos](view-photos.md) — your own photos one at a time, zoomed in or not. - [Slideshow](slideshow.md) — a folder's photos and videos, one after another. - [Exporting your photos and videos](export-your-videos.md) — copied with their dates. --- ## The library home URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/library/home/ ## What it is for The home screen lays your titles out in rows so you find something to watch without hunting for a file name, with a band at the top featuring a few of them. ![The library home, with the featured band above two Recently played cards, both resuming partway through](../images/library/home-rows.webp) ## How to use it ### Open something 1. Rest the pointer on a card for a quick preview. 2. Click the card to open the title. 3. Copy a video into a library folder — it appears on its own, about ten seconds later. ### Choose the featured band ![The Featured background setting, set to Gradient](../images/library/home-featured-background.webp) 1. Open **Settings › Interface** ([Interface](../settings/interface.md)), under **Featured background**. 2. Pick a design: **Title artwork**, **Feathered artwork** or **Carousel** use each title's wide image; **Gradient**, **Feathered poster** or **Poster in a glow** use its poster. 3. Click **Save**. ## Good to know - *Recently played* shows one card per title — a series stays on the episode you're partway through, then moves to the next one. - Albums have their own row, *New music*, with square covers; *Recently added* holds films and series. - A design with wide images shows only once every title in the band has one; until then the band uses its poster version. - The featured band is on the home screen only — a category or source page starts with its rows. - After a moment the band plays a clip — *TRAILER* or *PREVIEW* says which. Its **×** stops it, and no clip plays there again until Kaveo restarts. --- ## The card menu URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/library/title-menu/ ## What it is for Right-click a card for the everyday actions on that title — play it, tag it, or manage its file — without opening its page first. ![A card's right-click menu: Play, Details, list and tag actions, Correct match, Write metadata beside the file, Subtitles, file actions including Exclude from library, and Delete file from disk](../images/library/title-menu-menu.webp) ## How to use it 1. Right-click a card to open its menu. 2. Choose **Play**, or, for example, **Resume from 12:34** / **Play from the start** if you stopped partway through. 3. Choose **Details** to open the title's own page. 4. Choose **Add to My list**, **Add to favorites**, **Mark as watched**, **Mark as Anime**, **Mark as Adult** or **Add to saga…** to file or tag it. 5. For a local file, choose **File info…**, **Rename / normalize…**, **Open containing folder**, **Exclude from library…** or **Delete file from disk…**. ## Good to know - An episode's own actions are on its row on the series page, not on the series card's menu. The row opens it from anywhere on it, its picture and text included. - On a series card, **Mark as watched** marks every episode. - Once they are all watched, the entry reads **Mark as not watched** and clears them all. - For a title on your Jellyfin server, **Mark as watched** also marks it on the server, so your other devices see it. - **Scan for new files on the server**: see [New files on a server](../sources/server-scan.md). - **Delete file from disk…** permanently removes the file; Kaveo asks you to confirm first. - A file watched almost to the end is marked as watched automatically. --- ## Trailers URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/library/trailers/ ## What it is for Watch a film's or a series' trailer without leaving Kaveo, as sharp as your screen allows and in the language you prefer. ## How to use it 1. On a title's page, click **Trailer**. It plays over the page; click outside it to close it. 2. In **Settings › Interface**, set **Trailer quality**. **Automatic** follows the screen Kaveo is on and your connection, so a trailer starts within seconds. A fixed quality, up to **2160p (4K)**, is downloaded however long it takes. 3. Set **Trailer language** to **Same as the app**, **Original language of the title** or one language. 4. To see trailers on the library's covers, set **Hover preview** to **YouTube trailer**. ## Good to know - The first time a trailer plays it is downloaded, which takes a few seconds; after that it starts at once. - When a title has no trailer in the chosen language, its trailer in another language plays. - A trailer you keep beside a film plays first: name it like the film with *-trailer* added (*Film (2016)-trailer.mkv*), or put it in a *Trailers* folder in the film's or the series' folder. It is never shown as a title of its own. - Many trailers are published only in 1080p, so a 4K screen shows them at 1080p. - A title on a Jellyfin server plays the trailer the server keeps or knows, or one found for it. - When nothing else has one, Kaveo asks KinoCheck, a free trailer service. --- ## Search and genres URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/library/search/ ## What it is for Search, or click a genre, to see a plain list of titles instead of the home's rows — a result you can sort and narrow further. ![Search results for "el": three matching titles](../images/library/search-results.webp) ## How to use it ### Search or open a genre 1. Type in the search field (press **/** to jump there), or click a genre row's title on the home screen. 2. Look over the grid of cards that comes back. 3. To start over, click the cross at the end of the search field (**Clear search**). ### Narrow it further ![The grid narrowed to the Animation chip, with the sort control above it](../images/library/search-genre.webp) 1. Click a chip above the grid — *All*, or a genre or tag — to narrow the list further. 2. Use the sort control to reorder the list by **Title**, **Year** or **Recent**. ### Find music ![Search results for "josh": the artist Josh Woodward above the grid, and his album under it](../images/library/search-music.webp) 1. Type an artist's name to see the artist and their albums; a compilation with a song by them is found too. 2. Type a song's title to see it under **Tracks**, above the grid; click its number, or double-click the row, to play it and go on with the rest of its album. Titles and albums found are shown in grids of their own. ## Good to know - A category or a source is a *place* and keeps the home's rows; a search or a single genre is a *result* and gets this list. - The chips show only the genres and tags your current list actually contains. --- ## Artists URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/library/artists/ ## What it is for See every artist in your music, open one to find their albums and the songs they sing on other albums, and play all of it at once. ![An artist's page: the artist's name, how many albums are theirs, Play all and Shuffle, and their albums under it](../images/library/artists.webp) ## How to use it 1. Open the **Music** category; the **Artists** row comes first, before the albums. 2. Click an artist, or click the row's title to see every artist. 3. On an artist's page, click **Play all** or **Shuffle**, or open one of their albums. 4. On an album page, click the artist's name to go to their page. ## Good to know - **Appears on** lists the albums of others, and the compilations, with a song by this artist; **Play all** plays only their songs from those. - An album whose songs are by different artists is one album by *Various Artists*, even when its files do not say so, as long as its songs share an album name and a folder. - An artist with no picture of their own shows a placeholder: see [Artist pictures](artist-pictures.md). --- ## Artist pictures URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/library/artist-pictures/ ## What it is for Show each artist's picture on their page, in the artists list and in a search — from your own files first. ![An artist's page: a round picture of the artist beside their name, Play all and Shuffle, and a wide picture dimmed behind them](../images/library/artist-pictures.webp) ## How to use it 1. In the folder named after the artist, beside their album folders, put *artist.jpg* or *folder.jpg*; a *backdrop.jpg* there fills the band behind their name. 2. With a Jellyfin server, the pictures it holds for an artist are used next. 3. For the rest, Kaveo looks online. To stop it, turn off **Artist pictures online** in **Settings › Metadata** and click **Save**. 4. To delete the pictures found online, click **Clear** beside **Downloaded artist pictures**. ## Good to know - Online pictures come from MusicBrainz and Wikimedia Commons, which receive the artist names and album titles — only for the artists you scroll past, as they appear. - A picture is used only when one of the artist's albums confirms who they are, so an artist with only loose songs keeps the placeholder. - An online picture's author and licence are shown under the artist's name; the licence opens the picture's page. - With a free fanart.tv or TheAudioDB key in **Settings › Metadata**, their pictures come after these, and a biography from TheAudioDB or Last.fm appears under the name. --- ## Playlists URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/library/playlists/ ## What it is for Gather songs from any album into a list of your own, and play it whenever you like. ![A playlist's page: its name, how many songs it holds, Play, Shuffle, and its songs, one of them marked Not found](../images/library/playlists.webp) ## How to use it 1. In any song's menu, choose **Add to playlist**, then a playlist or **New playlist…**. An album page has the same button for the whole album. 2. Open the **Music** category: the **Playlists** row sits under the albums. Click its title to see them all. 3. On a playlist's page, click **Play** or **Shuffle**, or a song to start from it. 4. Rest the pointer on a song to reorder it with the arrows, or take it out with the cross. 5. In the queue, **Save as playlist…** keeps what is playing. ## Good to know - **Import playlist…** reads an M3U file. Songs that moved are looked for in your library; web addresses are left out, and Kaveo tells you which. - An M3U file dropped on the window, opened with **Open** › **Open file…**, or opened with Kaveo from your [file manager](../file-manager.md) plays at once; **Save as playlist…** in the queue keeps it. - A song that is not on disk stays, marked **Not found**, and is skipped when the playlist plays. - **Export as M3U…** writes a file other players read. Songs only on a server are left out. - A [Jellyfin server](../sources/jellyfin.md)'s playlists appear under its name. They play here but change only on the server; **Save a copy to my playlists** gives you one you can edit. --- ## Podcasts URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/library/podcasts/ ## What it is for Follow podcasts without an account: Kaveo reads each show's RSS feed and lists its episodes. ![The Podcasts page: New episodes, then three shows, one of them marked Not answering](../images/library/podcasts.webp) ## How to use it 1. In **Settings › Library › Categories**, tick **Podcasts** on a category. That category is your podcasts page. 2. On it, click **Add podcast…** and paste the feed's address, or **Import OPML…** to bring your subscriptions from another app. 3. Open a show and click **Play** beside an episode. It streams; **Download** keeps a copy, which plays from then on. 4. An episode resumes where you stopped, and is marked played once you have heard 90% of it. ## Good to know - A folder of episodes in one of the category's folders becomes a show of its own. - Feeds are checked when Kaveo starts and every six hours; **Refresh** checks now. - A feed that stops answering says so; its episodes stay listed and Kaveo keeps asking. - Downloads go to the folder set in **Settings › Library › Folders**. - Speed and chapters work as for any other track. --- ## Album information URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/library/album-information/ ## What it is for Fill in what an album's tags leave out — its year, label, genres, how many tracks it has, and a missing cover — without changing your files. ![An album page: a square cover, the title and artist, the year and track count, the label, the album's description, then Play album, Shuffle, Add to playlist and the ⋯ menu above the tracks](../images/library/album-information.webp) ## How to use it 1. An *album.nfo* in the album's folder — written by Kodi, Jellyfin or Lidarr — is read by itself. 2. Kaveo looks albums up on MusicBrainz and fetches missing covers from the Cover Art Archive. To stop it, turn off **Album information online** in **Settings › Metadata** and click **Save**. 3. If an album is matched wrongly or not at all, click **⋯** › **Identify album…** on its page, click the right one and **Use this match**, or choose **None of these**. 4. Click **⋯** › **Write album.nfo** to save what Kaveo knows beside the album. ## Good to know - Your tags always win; the rest only fills what they leave empty. - An album is used only when exactly one match is found. Album titles and artist names are sent. - Free keys add more, each from the service's **Get a free key** link: covers from fanart.tv, Discogs and TheAudioDB, descriptions from TheAudioDB and Last.fm, and AcoustID recognises an album by its sound (it needs *fpcalc*). - Last.fm and AcoustID allow non-commercial use only; entering a key accepts their terms. - An *album.nfo* Kaveo did not write is never replaced. - Albums on a Jellyfin server keep the server's information. --- ## Categories URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/library/categories/ ## What it is for A category is a library of your own inside Kaveo — *Movies*, *Series*, or anything you like — naming the folders and kinds of content it holds, so you can go straight to the part of your collection you want. ![A category page: its own rows, narrowed to Movies, with the source bar underneath](../images/library/categories-page.webp) ## How to use it ### Visit a category 1. Click a category's name at the top of the library. 2. Browse its own rows, narrowed to what belongs there. 3. Pick a source in the bar underneath to narrow further. ### Create and manage one ![The categories list in Settings, each with its Accepts kinds and folders, and New category name below them](../images/library/categories-settings.webp) 1. Open **Settings › Library › Categories**, type a name under **New category name**, and click **Add**. 2. Beside **Accepts:**, tick which kinds of content it holds — none ticked means everything. 3. Click **Add folder…** to give it a folder to scan, or **Remove** beside its name to delete it. ## Good to know - Changes apply at once — there is no **Save**, and **Revert** cannot undo them. - Removing a category never touches the files on disk. - A server's library is mapped into a category from its connection wizard. - An empty category says why: a folder it cannot read is named, with **Edit the category** beside it. - When the categories do not all fit at the top, the last ones fold into **More**; a long name is cut after a whole word. - On a title's page, the category it belongs to is the one lit at the top. --- ## Editing music tags URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/library/edit-tags/ ## What it is for Correct the tags inside your music files, so Kaveo and every other player show the same thing, and store the loudness Kaveo measured in them. ![The Edit tags dialog on an album: the cover with Choose image…, the shared fields, and Save to files](../images/library/edit-tags.webp) ## How to use it 1. On an album's or an artist's page, click **⋯** › **Edit tags…**; for one song, use its menu. 2. Change the fields. With several songs, a field reading *Multiple values — type to replace them all* stays as it is unless you type in it. 3. Click **Save to files**. 4. To store loudness, click **⋯** › **Write ReplayGain tags…** on an album's or an artist's page, then **Write tags**. 5. To undo a write, click **⋯** › **Restore previous tags…** where you made it, choose it, then **Restore**. ## Good to know - Only what changes is written, a file is never left half-written, and a file changed since a write is not restored. - In **Identify album…**, **Use this and write to the files…** shows every change first; a song placed on a track with another title starts unticked. - DSF, DFF, MKA, WMA and AC3 files, and songs on a Jellyfin server, are listed and left alone. --- ## Genres and tags URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/library/tags/ ## What it is for Every title carries genres, plus two tags of Kaveo's own, **anime** and **adult**. Kaveo fills them in for you and lets you correct any of them. ![A title's genre and tag chips, with the + Tag chip after them](../images/library/tags-page.webp) ## How to use it ### See a title's tags 1. Open a title's page to see its genres and tags. ### Correct them ![The tags and genres editor, with the Available and Assigned lists](../images/library/tags-editor.webp) 1. Click the **Tag** chip after them to open the searchable list — an anime title's entry explains why, for example *Detected as anime: animation, in Japanese.* 2. Click an entry under **Available** to add it, or under **Assigned** to remove it. 3. Type a name and click **Add “…” as a genre** for one the list does not have. 4. Click **Restore automatic classification** or **Restore automatic genres** to hand a decision back to Kaveo. ## Good to know - Right-click a card and choose **Mark as Anime** or **Mark as Adult** without opening the title. - A correction you make is remembered — a later rescan will not undo it. - **Settings › Metadata › Recatalogue library** ([Metadata](../settings/metadata.md)) clears the cached metadata and starts over. --- ## Hiding adult content URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/library/adult-content/ ## What it is for Hide titles tagged adult from every library screen — the rows, the grid, search and *Recently played* — without touching the files themselves. ![The Adult content group in Settings, with Show adult content on and Add adult folder…](../images/library/adult-content-settings.webp) ## How to use it 1. Open **Settings › Library › Folders** and find **Adult content**. 2. Click **Add adult folder…** and pick a folder; everything under it is tagged adult automatically. 3. Turn off **Show adult content** and click **Save**. 4. Turn on **Show adult content** again to bring them back exactly as you left them. ## Good to know - It is a visibility switch, not a lock — Settings itself stays fully reachable, so it will not keep anyone out of it. - To tag one title without a whole folder, right-click its card and choose **Mark as Adult**. - Nothing is encrypted and nothing on disk moves. --- ## Correcting a wrong match URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/library/correct-a-match/ ## What it is for When a poster or a plot belongs to something else, Kaveo has matched a local title to the wrong film or series — correct it by hand. ![The Correct match dialog open over Sintel's title page, with the search already run and one candidate offered](../images/library/correct-a-match-dialog.webp) ## How to use it 1. Right-click the card and choose **Correct match…**, or click **⋯** on the title's page and choose it there. 2. If the right one is not shown, look under **What Kaveo read** — the name the file had before import, the title in the file, the file and its folder — and click the magnifier beside one to search for it, or type your own and click **Search**. 3. Click a candidate to read more about it beside the list — **View on TMDB** opens its page — then click **Use this match**. 4. If the title is on no online service at all, click **No match** instead: Kaveo keeps the name its files give and stops looking it up. ## Good to know - The match is pinned, so no later scan can undo it. - Only the metadata changes — the file, its name and its place in your library stay put. To see everything a file says about itself, choose **File info…** from the same menu. - To hand the decision back to Kaveo, open the same dialog and click **Restore automatic match** — it undoes **No match** too. --- ## File info URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/library/file-info/ ## What it is for See a title's file as it is on disk — its name, its folder, the name it had before Kaveo imported it, and everything its container declares — when you need to know what a file really is. ## How to use it 1. Right-click the card and choose **File info…**, or click **⋯** on the title's page and choose it there. 2. For a series or an album, pick the file from the list at the top. 3. Read the **File**, **Container** and **Streams** sections; any value can be selected and copied. 4. Click **Copy path** or **Open containing folder** to take the file elsewhere. ## Good to know - **Before import** shows the name a file was downloaded under, for files Kaveo moved itself. - The container and its streams are read with FFprobe; without it only the file and its folder are shown. - Server and hidden titles have no file info: their files are not on this computer. --- ## Collections URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/library/collections/ ## What it is for A saga groups titles that belong together. When you own two or more titles of one saga, the home gets a row for it. ![The Blender Open Movies row on the library home](../images/library/collections-row.webp) ## How to use it ### See the whole saga ![The flat grid narrowed to the Blender Open Movies saga](../images/library/collections-saga.webp) 1. Click the row's title to see the whole saga. ### Add a title to one ![The saga picker: an existing saga, and the field to create a new one](../images/library/collections-picker.webp) 1. Right-click a card and choose **Add to saga…** to add a title. 2. Pick a saga from the list, or type a new name and pick **Create “…”**. 3. Click **Add to saga**. Enter in the field adds the title to the first saga that matches, or creates the one you typed. ## Good to know - Sagas come from NFO files, TMDB and your Jellyfin server; a series joins one only by hand. - The picker withholds **Create** only when your text exactly matches a saga you already have — it does not hide any other saga. - Nothing moves on disk. --- ## Missing episodes URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/library/missing-episodes/ ## What it is for On a series' page, Kaveo tells you which episodes of each season you are missing, and what is still to air. ## How to use it 1. Open a series' page, pick a season above its episodes, and look under it for *Missing episodes:* and its numbers. 2. Check the page for the next episode airing, and each season for its own schedule. 3. If your numbering does not match the provider's, click the offer under the message if it is right, for example *This season starts at my episode 14*. 4. Click **⋯** › **Follow** so the show appears on your home screen in *Coming soon* or *Catch up*. ## Good to know - Kaveo stays quiet rather than guess — nothing shows for specials, an unmatched show, or a season you own none of. - An episode that has not aired yet is never counted as missing. - A file covering a whole season, like a ripped Blu-ray disc, counts as present for every episode on it. --- ## Metadata files URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/library/metadata-files/ ## What it is for Kodi, Jellyfin, Emby and other tools keep what they know about a film or an episode in an NFO file beside it. Kaveo reads those files, and writes them so a correction you make reaches every other program. ![Write metadata beside the file, on a card's right-click menu](../images/library/metadata-files-write.webp) ## How to use it 1. Nothing to switch on — if your library already has NFO files, Kaveo uses them for the title, plot, genres and saga instead of guessing. 2. Right-click a film's card, or an episode's row on its series page, and choose **Write metadata beside the file**. 3. Look for the message naming the file Kaveo wrote. ## Good to know - Kaveo will not touch an NFO file it did not write — it leaves another tool's file alone and tells you so. - Writing happens only when you ask, one title at a time; an episode's file is written from its row, not the series card. - Music's metadata lives in its own audio tags and is left out. --- ## Your own photos and videos URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/library/personal-videos/ ## What it is for A personal category holds your own photos and videos, from a phone or a camera, grouped by the folders you already made, newest first. They never appear on the home or among films and series. ![The Home videos category: one card per folder, each saying how many photos and videos it holds and when](../images/library/personal-videos-page.webp) ## How to use it 1. In **Settings › Library › Categories**, add a category, tick **Personal**, then click **Add folder…** and pick the folder of your photos and videos. 2. Click the category at the top of the library, then a folder to open it. 3. A folder shows its photos and videos together, newest first. Click a video to play it, or **Play all** — a [slideshow](slideshow.md) once the folder holds a photo, else each video into the next. 4. Click a photo to open it on its own — see [Viewing photos](view-photos.md). ![A folder's page: its photos and videos in one grid, newest first, each video with its length](../images/library/personal-videos-folder.webp) ## Good to know - Kaveo never renames, moves or looks up your photos and videos online, and never files a download into this category. - A photo or video's date is the one the camera wrote, or else the file's own. - A Live Photo carries a **LIVE** badge; its short video stays with it rather than appearing on its own. - AVCHD camera files are not shown yet. --- ## Viewing photos URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/library/view-photos/ ## What it is for A click on a photo in one of your own folders opens it on its own, on black, with its name, its date and its place in the folder across the top. ![A photo open on its own, with its name, date and place in the folder in the bar across the top](../images/library/view-photos-photo.webp) ## How to use it 1. Turn the mouse wheel to zoom toward the pointer, and drag to move around. The spot under the pointer stays put once the photo is larger than the window. 2. Double-click to see the photo at its actual size, and again to fit it back. 3. Press **→** or **←** to go through the folder, newest first. A video stops you: its picture shows, and nothing plays. 4. Press **Enter** or click the video to play it. **Esc** in the player, or the end of the video, brings you back to it; in full screen, the first **Esc** only leaves full screen. 5. Press **Esc**, or click the close button, to return to the folder. ![A video in the viewer, showing its picture with a play mark and waiting to be played](../images/library/view-photos-video.webp) ## Good to know - Opening a photo stops a video that was still playing in the background. - A photo that cannot be shown says why, and keeps its place in the folder. - A photo opened [from outside Kaveo](../file-manager.md) steps through its folder by name; **Esc** goes to the library. - A Live Photo carries a **LIVE** badge. Hold **Space**, or press and hold the badge, to play its motion from the start, without sound; let go and the photo comes back. If the motion ends first, the photo comes back on its own. --- ## Slideshow URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/library/slideshow/ ## What it is for **Play all** on one of your own folders that holds photos shows it as a slideshow, newest first: each photo stays on screen for a few seconds, and each video plays to its end. ![A slideshow on a folder's newest photo, with the pause button beside the close button in the bar across the top](../images/library/slideshow.webp) ## How to use it 1. Open the folder and click **Play all**. 2. A photo stays for the time set in **Settings › Interface** — five seconds unless you change it. A Live Photo plays its motion once, without sound, before the slideshow moves on. 3. A video opens in the player, and the slideshow carries on when it ends. 4. Press **Space**, or click the pause button at the top right, to pause; press it again to carry on. 5. Press **Esc** to return to the folder. ## Good to know - **Esc** in the player stops the slideshow on that video, paused. Press **Space** to play it and carry on. - **→** and **←** still move through the folder by hand, and the slideshow goes on from there. - The slideshow stops on the last photo or video rather than starting over. - While it runs, your screen does not go to sleep. - A folder of videos only plays them one into the next, as before. --- ## Exporting your photos and videos URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/library/export-your-videos/ ## What it is for Copy your own photos and videos somewhere else — a USB stick, a shared folder — keeping the date each was taken, so they sort the same way there. The photos and subtitles named after a video go with it, and a Live Photo's motion goes with its photo. ![A video's right-click menu on its folder's page, with Copy file and Export a copy… under Open containing folder](../images/library/export-your-videos-menu.webp) ## How to use it ### One photo or video 1. Right-click its card on its folder's page, the photo in the viewer, or the picture while a video plays. 2. Choose **Export a copy…** and pick a folder. ### A whole folder 1. Open the folder's page and click **Export folder…**, or right-click the folder's card. 2. Pick where to put it: Kaveo makes a folder with the same name there. ## Good to know - The progress shows at the top of the library. Click the cross beside it to stop: what is already copied stays, and a message says where the copies are. - Nothing is ever replaced: a name already taken gets a number, and a copy already there is not made again, so exporting again after a stop adds only what is missing. - Private videos and ripped discs are left out, and the message says how many. A folder inside the one you export has a card of its own, and is exported from there. --- # Watching ## Watching URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/watching/ A video fills the window; the controls appear when you reach for them. - [Player controls](player-controls.md) — the playback bar, leaving without stopping. - [Audio and subtitle tracks](audio-and-subtitle-tracks.md) — soundtrack and subtitles. - [Several subtitles](more-subtitles.md) — at once. - [Volume and dynamics](volume-and-dynamics.md) — night mode. - [Same loudness for every title](same-loudness.md) — one level. - [Equalizer](equalizer.md) — tone controls. - [Listening to music](listen-to-music.md) — tracks and albums. - [The song screen](now-playing.md) — what a song shows. - [The music queue](music-queue.md) — choose what plays next. - [Music while you browse](music-bar.md) — the bar, shuffle, repeat. - [Lyrics](lyrics.md) — a song's words as it plays. - [Visualizer](visualizer.md) — what the music looks like. - [Next episode and queue](next-episode.md) — move between episodes and tracks. - [Playing on a loop](loop.md) — for hours, unattended. - [Sleep timer](sleep-timer.md) — pause after a while. - [Skipping openings](skip-intro.md) — skip a series' opening or ending. - [Screenshots](screenshots.md) — save what is on screen. - [HDR output](hdr.md) — send HDR video to an HDR display. - [Saving a frame](save-a-frame.md) — the video's own picture. - [Editing a copy of a video](edit-a-copy.md) — trim, turn or silence a video, as a new file. - [Copying to the clipboard](copy-to-clipboard.md) — paste the picture or a video elsewhere. - [Media keys and the desktop](media-keys.md) — play, pause and skip from outside the window. - [Opening a web address](open-a-url.md) — play a stream or a web page. - [When the graphics card stops responding](graphics-card.md) — how Kaveo recovers. --- ## Player controls URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/watching/player-controls/ ## What it is for Control playback, and leave the player with or without stopping it. ![The left part of the playback bar, numbered 1 to 7](../images/watching/player-controls-bar-left.webp) ![The right part of the playback bar, numbered 8 to 15](../images/watching/player-controls-bar-right.webp) 1. Move the mouse to bring up the bar. 2. Rest the pointer on the timeline, or drag it, to see that moment: a picture, the time and its chapter's name. ### Leaving the player ![The now-playing pill, with the film's name and a cross, beside the search field and Open in the top bar](../images/watching/player-controls-pill.webp) 1. Click the arrow at the top left, or press **Esc**: the film stops, saved, and its page opens (an episode's series, a song's album). Each step of the path beside the arrow opens its place. 2. Or right-click and choose **Settings**: the film keeps playing. 3. Click the pill beside **Open** to return to the player, or its cross to stop the film. ## Good to know - A right-click on either 10-second button also steps to the previous or next item — see [Next episode and queue](next-episode.md). - A narrow window drops some bar buttons; the right-click menu keeps them. - The position is saved on closing, on every pause and every 10 seconds (a private title: on pause only). When you open the film again, **Resume from 12:34** starts 30 seconds before the point where you stopped. --- ## Audio and subtitle tracks URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/watching/audio-and-subtitle-tracks/ ## What it is for When a video carries more than one soundtrack or subtitle, choose which one plays. ![The player's right-click menu with Audio open beside it: the film's English track, its title on the first line and Dolby Digital, 5.1, 48 kHz and 640 kbps on the second, ticked as the one playing, then Sound, which holds the loudness, night, dialogue and equaliser settings, and Audio delay](../images/watching/audio-and-subtitle-tracks-audio.webp) ![The player's right-click menu with Subtitles open beside it: Off, five of the video's own tracks under In this file with German ticked as playing, then More (5), a French file under Beside the video, then Timing, Search online… and Tools](../images/watching/audio-and-subtitle-tracks-subtitles.webp) ## How to use it 1. While a video plays, right-click the picture. 2. Point at **Audio** and click a track; the ticked one is playing. 3. Point at **Subtitles** and click **Off**, a track under **In this file**, or a file under **Beside the video**. 4. Or press **A** to step through the audio tracks, and **S** through the video's own subtitle tracks and off. ## Good to know - Kaveo remembers the language you pick, or **Off**, for that film or series, later episodes included — from your own folders and from Jellyfin alike. A subtitle file you pick comes back whenever that video plays. A commentary never opens first; see [Audio settings](../settings/audio.md) for your languages. A private title keeps no language. - **Audio** › **Audio delay** moves the sound 50 or 500 ms at a time, or press **K** and **L**; it is remembered for that film or series. The subtitles have their own, under **Subtitles** › **Timing** — see [Subtitle timing](../subtitles/delay.md). - To get, time, write or translate a subtitle, see [Loading subtitles](../subtitles/load.md), [Finding subtitles online](../subtitles/online-search.md), [Syncing subtitles](../subtitles/sync.md), [Writing and editing subtitles](../subtitles/edit.md) and [Translating subtitles](../subtitles/translate.md). --- ## Two or three subtitles at once URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/watching/more-subtitles/ ## What it is for Show up to three subtitles at the same time: the dialogue and a separate track for signs and songs, or the original language above a translation. ## How to use it 1. While a video plays, right-click the picture and point at **Subtitles**. 2. Point at **Second subtitle** and click a track under **In this file**, or a file under **Beside the video**. **Third subtitle** works the same way. 3. In the same menu, **Position** puts it **As in the file** or at the **Top**. 4. **Timing** moves only that subtitle, 50 or 500 ms at a time. ## Good to know - Kaveo remembers your second and third subtitle for that film or series, and finds the same track again in the next episode by its language and name. If an episode has no such track, it says so. - **Z** and **X** move only the first subtitle. - A subtitle already on screen cannot be picked twice; point at its greyed row to see why. --- ## Volume and dynamics URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/watching/volume-and-dynamics/ ## What it is for A song, an episode and a film can sound equally loud, a film can be watched quietly at night, and voices can stand out from the music. ![The Volume and dynamics group in Settings, with Volume control on Software, Same loudness for every title on and its levelling rows, Night mode set to Medium and Dialogue boost set to +3 dB](../images/watching/volume-and-dynamics.webp) ## How to use it 1. In **Settings › Audio**, turn on **Same loudness for every title**; your local files are measured in the background while nothing plays. Its other rows are in [Same loudness for every title](same-loudness.md). 2. Set **Night mode** to **Light**, **Medium** or **Strong** to bring dialogue and explosions closer. 3. Set **Dialogue boost** to **+3 dB** or **+6 dB** to raise the voices. 4. While watching, right-click the picture and open **Audio** › **Sound** to change any of them at once. ## Good to know - None of them acts on Dolby or DTS sent undecoded to a receiver with **Bitstream passthrough**. - **Dialogue boost** needs 5.1 or 7.1 sound: stereo has no separate voice channel. - The slider goes to 200 %; its middle, the original level, is the only bit-perfect one. Keys and the wheel stop there: press again to go higher. Titles open at your last volume. - With **Volume control** on **Output device** in [Audio](../settings/audio.md), the slider turns the device's own volume, so the sound stays bit-perfect below 100 %. It needs a chosen **Audio output device** with **Exclusive output** on. Its volume returns afterwards, even after a crash. - Music levelled by another program (ReplayGain) plays at that level until Kaveo has measured it, or for good with **Loudness from** on **ReplayGain tags**. --- ## Same loudness for every title URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/watching/same-loudness/ ## What it is for Every title plays equally loud, so you stop reaching for the volume between a quiet film and a loud song. ![The levelling rows in Settings › Audio: Same loudness for every title on, Target level on Custom at −20 LUFS, Album gain on Automatic, Loudness from on Measured, Peaks on Lower the gain, and Song not measured yet at −4.5 dB](../images/watching/same-loudness.webp) ## How to use it 1. In **Settings › Audio**, turn on **Same loudness for every title**. 2. Pick a **Target level**: **−18** is the usual, **−14** louder, **−23** quieter; **Custom** sets any level from −24 to −10. 3. **Album gain** on **Automatic** keeps an album's quiet and loud songs apart when it plays in order. 4. **Loudness from**: **Measured**, or **ReplayGain tags** if another program levelled your music. 5. **Peaks**: **Lower the gain** never touches a title's dynamics; **Limiter** reaches the target exactly; **Off** lets a loud peak clip. ## Good to know - To make everything louder or quieter, use the volume, not the target. - With **Off**, lowering Kaveo's volume leaves room for the peaks; a device's own volume does not. - **Song not measured yet** sets how quietly a song plays until it is measured. --- ## Equalizer URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/watching/equalizer/ ## What it is for The equalizer raises or lowers the bass, the middle and the treble of everything you play, music and video alike. ![The Equalizer group in Settings, with Equalizer on, Preset set to Loudness, the Preamp and ten band sliders from 31 Hz to 16 kHz, and the Response curve under them](../images/watching/equalizer.webp) ## How to use it 1. In **Settings › Audio**, turn on **Equalizer**; it is off to begin with. 2. Pick a **Preset**, such as **Bass boost** or **Vocal**, or move the sliders yourself. 3. Lower **Preamp** to leave room when you raise several bands; **Response** draws what they do together. 4. Type a name beside **Save as preset** and press **Save** to keep your own curve. 5. While playing, right-click the picture and open **Audio** to switch presets at once. ## Good to know - Choosing a preset turns the equalizer on; **Off** in the **Audio** menu keeps your sliders for next time. - It does not act on Dolby or DTS sound sent undecoded to a receiver with **Bitstream passthrough**; use the receiver's own tone controls there. - Changes are heard straight away and fade in smoothly, without a click. --- ## Next episode and queue URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/watching/next-episode/ ## What it is for Kaveo plays through a series, an album or a queue you build, and moves on by itself when one item ends. ![The Up next card: the next episode's picture with a countdown, its name, Play now and Cancel](../images/watching/next-episode-up-next.webp) ## How to use it ### Step through the list 1. Click Previous or Next on the playback bar, or right-click Back 10 seconds or Forward 10 seconds, to play the previous or next item. 2. When an item ends and another follows, the *Up next* card counts down: **Play now** starts it at once, **Cancel** goes back to the library. Album tracks follow each other with no card. ### Build a queue 1. On a title page, click **⋯** › **Play folder** (shown when its folder holds several videos) to play them from this one on. 2. From [your file manager](../file-manager.md), choose **Play this folder with Kaveo**, or **Add to Kaveo's queue** to add one file to the end. ## Good to know - **Add to Kaveo's queue** plays the file at once when nothing is playing. For music, see [The music queue](music-queue.md). - The next episode keeps the copy you are watching; a queue holds only files on your computer. - A file opened on its own returns to the library when it ends; Previous and Next step to the files beside it. - A queue, a playlist or a folder of your own videos has **Repeat** and, in **⋯**, **Shuffle**. Any other video has **Repeat** alone: off, or this video again. - Videos keep their own shuffle and repeat, apart from music's, after a restart too. --- ## Playing on a loop URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/watching/loop/ ## What it is for An advert on a screen at work, the music in a shop: Kaveo plays a video, a folder or a playlist over and over by itself. ![A paused film with the playback bar up: the Repeat button, lit, shows a small 1 — this video plays again when it ends](../images/watching/loop.webp) ## How to use it 1. To repeat what is playing, click **Repeat** on the playback bar: off, then this video, then the whole list (music: the list first). 2. To start a loop from outside Kaveo, right-click a folder and choose **Loop this folder with Kaveo** ([From your file manager](../file-manager.md)), or start Kaveo with the loop option on a video, a folder or a playlist ([Command line](../command-line.md)). ## Good to know - A video starts again at once, in the same window and in full screen if it was, with no *Up next* card between the laps; the screen does not go to sleep. Music goes from the last track to the first with no gap, or with the crossfade if it is on. - A lap is not a new play: *Recently played* shows the loop once, and no position is kept. - A file that does not play is skipped. If nothing in the list plays, the loop stops and says so. - Started the same way after a restart, it goes on where it was; with the full screen option, it fills the screen at once. - A loop leaves your own **Repeat** choices as they were. A lit **Repeat** means what plays starts again at its end. --- ## Sleep timer URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/watching/sleep-timer/ ## What it is for Fall asleep to an audiobook, a podcast or a film without it playing all night. ## How to use it ![The player's menu on a track with Sleep timer open: Off is ticked, then In 15, 30, 45, 60 and 90 minutes, and At the end of this title](../images/watching/sleep-timer.webp) 1. While something plays, right-click the player and open **Sleep timer**. 2. Choose how long: from 15 to 90 minutes, or **At the end of this title**. 3. When the time is up, playback pauses; at the end of the title, nothing else starts. 4. The menu shows the minutes left; choose **Off** to cancel. ## Good to know - The timer ends when you close the player, and is not kept after a restart. - An audiobook (M4B) or any track over 20 minutes picks up exactly where it paused next time. --- ## Listening to music URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/watching/listen-to-music/ ## What it is for Play the music in your library, or any audio file on your computer, in the same player as your films. ![The player on a track, on a background in the cover's colour: the album's cover in the middle, the title, the artist and the album under it, and the playback bar at the bottom](../images/watching/listen-to-music.webp) ## How to use it 1. Open an album from the **Music** category and click **Play album**, **Shuffle**, or **Play** beside a track, or its cover's play button. 2. The cover, title, artist and album fill the window: see [The song screen](now-playing.md). 3. When a track ends, the next starts with no gap: a live album plays as one piece. 4. Click the arrow at the top left to go on listening while browsing: see [Music while you browse](music-bar.md). 5. Any other file plays from **Open**, a drop, or [your file manager](../file-manager.md). ## Good to know - A song starts from the beginning; an audiobook resumes where it stopped. - **Play album** turns shuffle off, **Shuffle** on. - MP3, FLAC, AAC, ALAC, Ogg, Opus, WavPack, WAV, AIFF, Matroska audio, M4B and DSD files play. - Tracks of different kinds, such as a FLAC then an MP3, follow each other after a short pause. - **Crossfade**, in **Settings › Audio**, fades one song into the next, except within an album unless you turn off **Not between songs of the same album**. - A file that cannot be played is not added to *Recently played*. - A check mark beside a track means you have played it. - Music on a [Jellyfin server](../sources/jellyfin.md) plays the same way, streamed. - To browse by artist, see [Artists](../library/artists.md). --- ## The song screen URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/watching/now-playing/ ## What it is for See what is playing and where it comes from, and go on to its artist, its album or the next song. ![The player on a song, over a background in the cover's colour: the cover in the middle; under it the title, the artist and the album as links, the year and the track's number, and the file's format in small boxes; the Up next card at the bottom right, above the playback bar](../images/watching/now-playing.webp) ## How to use it 1. Play a song: its cover fills the middle, over a background in the cover's colour. 2. Click the artist or the album under the title to open its page; the song goes on playing in the bar at the bottom. 3. The album line gives the year and the track's number, and how many the album has when the file says so. 4. The boxes under it name the file's format: its kind, its bit depth for a lossless file, its sample rate, and its bitrate for a compressed one. 5. Click **Up next**, at the bottom right, to play the next song now. ## Good to know - Turn off **Colour from the cover** in [Settings › Interface](../settings/interface.md) for a plain background; the **Light** and **High contrast** player themes always keep one. - **Up next** is hidden while the queue is open, when nothing follows, and when one song repeats. --- ## The music queue URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/watching/music-queue/ ## What it is for Line up tracks from several albums, and see, reorder or trim what is still to come. ![The album page with the queue open on the right: a played track at the top, then Now playing with the current track in the accent colour, then Next with the tracks to come, each with its cover, artist and length, and Clear and Save as playlist… at the top](../images/watching/music-queue.webp) ## How to use it 1. On an album page, click the three dots beside a track, or right-click the track. 2. Choose **Play next** to hear it after the current track, or **Add to queue** to put it at the end. 3. Open the queue with the list button on the playback bar or on the bar at the bottom of the window. 4. Click a track to play it, or drag it up or down **Next** to move it. Rest the pointer on one for its buttons: play, move up, move down, take out. **Clear** empties what is still to come — it asks first, since nothing brings the list back. ## Good to know - The queue opens on **Now playing**; what has already played is above it. - Queuing a track while an album plays keeps the rest of the album: the queue starts from it. - A track already in the queue is not added twice; **Play next** moves it instead. - If you close Kaveo while music plays, the queue is still there next time. - In the last seconds of a track the next one is already on its way. Taking it out or moving it then is too late: it plays, and the rest of the queue follows it. --- ## Music while you browse URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/watching/music-bar/ ## What it is for Browse your library, or anything else in Kaveo, while a track plays, with its controls at the bottom of the window. ![An album page with the music bar at the bottom: on the left the cover, the title, the artist and the album, and the next track; in the middle shuffle, previous, pause, next and repeat over the time and the position bar; on the right the volume, the queue and the stop button](../images/watching/music-bar.webp) ## How to use it 1. While a track plays, click the back button at the top left of the player: the track's album opens, and the music goes on. 2. Use the bar's buttons to pause, skip, shuffle the queue or repeat it; click or drag along the position bar under them to move in the track, and set the volume on the right. 3. Click the cover or the title to return to the player, the artist or the album to open its page. 4. Click the cross to stop. ## Good to know - Repeat has three states: off, the whole list, and this track. The track's own end repeats it; Next still moves on. - Music keeps its own shuffle and repeat, apart from videos', and Kaveo remembers them after a restart. With shuffle on, an album or playlist you play starts shuffled. - After a restart, the bar shows *Queue from your last session*: the play button starts it again. - The queue's **Save as playlist…** keeps it under a name: see [Playlists](../library/playlists.md). --- ## Lyrics URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/watching/lyrics/ ## What it is for Follow the words of a song as it plays, and jump to any line. ![The player on a track: the cover on the left, the lyrics on the right with the line being sung in white and the others dimmed, and the playback bar at the bottom](../images/watching/lyrics.webp) ## How to use it 1. Play a track that has lyrics. They appear beside the cover by themselves. 2. When the lyrics are timed, the line being sung is lit and the column scrolls to keep it in view. 3. Click a line to play the song from there. 4. Scroll with the mouse wheel to read ahead; after a few seconds the column follows the song again. 5. To hide the lyrics, click the microphone button on the playback bar. Click it again to bring them back; Kaveo remembers your choice until you close it. ## Good to know - Kaveo reads a lyrics file with the same name as the track, beside it: an LRC file, an enhanced LRC file, or a plain text file. It also reads the lyrics stored inside the track itself. - When a track has both timed and plain lyrics, the timed ones are shown. - A track without lyrics has no microphone button. - Music on a [Jellyfin server](../sources/jellyfin.md) shows the lyrics the server found for it. The server ignores an offset line, so lyrics that rely on one run late there. - If the lyrics run early or late, the timing is in the lyrics file: an offset line in it moves them all. - A track without lyrics gets LRCLIB's, unless **Lyrics online** is turned off in **Settings › Metadata**. --- ## Visualizer URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/watching/visualizer/ ## What it is for Watch the sound of a track while it plays: its spectrum, or its waveform. ![The player on a track: white bars rising over the bottom of the album's cover, from the low notes on the left to the high ones on the right, the track's title and artist under it, and the playback bar at the bottom with the visualizer button lit](../images/watching/visualizer.webp) ## How to use it 1. Play a track. 2. Click the visualizer button on the playback bar, beside the volume: the spectrum rises over the bottom of the cover. 3. Click it again for the oscilloscope, in the cover's place, and once more for the cover alone. 4. Kaveo remembers your choice. **Visualizer** in **Settings › Audio** sets it too. ## Good to know - It shows what you hear, when you hear it, after the volume and the [equalizer](equalizer.md): lower the volume and the bars drop with it. - A track sent undecoded to a receiver by **Bitstream passthrough** has nothing for Kaveo to draw, and the player says so. - On a narrow window the lyrics take the cover's place, and the visualizer gives way to them. --- ## Skipping openings URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/watching/skip-intro/ ## What it is for When a file marks its opening, its ending or the scene before the opening as a chapter, Kaveo offers to skip it, and learns your habit for the rest of that series. ![The Skip card in the bottom-right corner, reading Chapter 1, Opening and 0:08 left beside its Skip button, above the right end of the playback bar](../images/watching/skip-intro-offer.webp) ## How to use it ### Skip an opening or ending 1. While the opening, the ending or the scene before the opening plays, click **Skip** on the card in the bottom-right corner. Kaveo jumps to a second before the end of that chapter. 2. Skip the same part in two episodes, and the next episodes skip it by themselves. Each part is learned on its own. 3. Click **Watch it**, shown for a few seconds each time, to see it after all — Kaveo then offers the button again instead of skipping. ### Turn it off ![Settings with Behaviour selected in the rail, showing Offer to skip intros and endings switched on, above the Saved frames and Web video quality rows](../images/watching/skip-intro-setting.webp) 1. Open **Settings › Behaviour** ([Behaviour](../settings/behaviour.md)), turn off **Offer to skip intros and endings** and click **Save**. Kaveo then neither offers a skip nor skips by itself. ## Good to know - Kaveo goes by the chapter's name (*Opening*, *OP*, *Ending*, *ED*, *Prologue* and similar). When an episode's chapters have no names, a chapter as long as a theme song, near the start or at the end, is taken as the opening or the ending. Nothing is guessed from the picture or sound. - An *Intro* chapter just before an *Opening* is the prologue, not the opening. - Jumping into the opening yourself, with the timeline or arrow keys, is never skipped. - The choice lasts until you close Kaveo. --- ## Screenshots URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/watching/screenshots/ ## What it is for Save exactly what Kaveo is showing — a video and its controls, or any other screen — as a picture file. ## How to use it 1. Press **F12** anywhere in Kaveo: in the library, in Settings, or while a video plays. 2. Kaveo saves it as a PNG file in a *screenshots* folder inside its cache folder: - on Linux, the *kaveo* folder inside the hidden *.cache* folder in your home folder; - on Windows, *AppData\Local\kaveo\cache*, a *screenshots* folder inside. 3. Kaveo shows no message when it saves one — look for the new file in that folder. ## Good to know - While a private title is open in the player, even behind another screen, Kaveo refuses the capture and says *No screenshot: this title is hidden*. - Each file is named with a number that grows, so the newest screenshot has the largest number. - On Windows, **F12** takes no screenshot while a video is in exclusive fullscreen. --- ## HDR output URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/watching/hdr/ ## What it is for An HDR film carries brighter highlights and richer colour than an ordinary video. Kaveo can send it to an HDR-capable display so it looks the way it was mastered. ![Settings › Display & HDR on its HDR output tab while an SDR film is open: Per-display settings on the global profile, then HDR output on Auto — HDR when the display supports it, Use HDR on SDR content off with the notice that this title is SDR, so the settings do not apply to it, and Display peak on Auto — from the display](../images/watching/hdr-settings.webp) ## How to use it 1. While a video plays, press **Ctrl+H** and pick the **Display & HDR** tab, or open **Settings › Display & HDR**. 2. Set **HDR output** to **Auto — HDR when the display supports it** (the default) or **On — strict HDR passthrough**, then click **Save**. 3. For the best result, calibrate first: on Windows, run Windows HDR Calibration (from the Microsoft Store) and Kaveo reads the saved value by itself. 4. Otherwise, or if your screen's peak is under 400 or over 2000 nits (Kaveo then assumes 600), set **Display peak** (shown only with **Auto**) to **Override** and type your screen's rated HDR peak in the number beside it. ## Good to know - HDR engages only while an HDR video plays; Kaveo restores your display when it closes. - An SDR film never switches the display, unless you turn on **Use HDR on SDR content** (off by default). - Music never switches the display, whatever these settings say: there is no picture to show in HDR. - On Linux, HDR switches on by itself on KDE Plasma; on other desktops, turn on your desktop's own HDR support first. --- ## Saving a frame URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/watching/save-a-frame/ ## What it is for Save the picture on screen as a photo, at the video's own size and without the controls or the subtitles. A frame of a video in a [personal category](../library/personal-videos.md) keeps the date it was filmed, and the place when the video recorded one. ![The player's right-click menu over a paused video of your own, with its copies in the middle: Save frame, Copy frame, Copy file and Export a copy…, then Edit a copy… and Show in folder](../images/watching/save-a-frame-menu.webp) ## How to use it 1. Pause on the moment you want. 2. Right-click the picture and choose **Save frame**, or press **Shift+S**. 3. A message names the new picture; click the folder beside it to open where it went. 4. To save PNG pictures instead of JPEG, change **Saved frames** in [Behaviour](../settings/behaviour.md). ## Good to know - A frame of a video in a personal category is saved beside the video. Any other video's frame goes to a *Kaveo* folder in your Pictures folder, with no date. - Kaveo never replaces a picture: a second frame of the same second is numbered, as in *(2)*. - There is no **Save frame** for a private title, a video playing from a server, or a trailer. - When a video is [made private](../private/hide-a-title.md), the frames saved beside it go into the vault with it, and come back out with it. --- ## Editing a copy of a video URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/watching/edit-a-copy/ ## What it is for Keep only part of a video, turn a clip filmed sideways, or remove its sound. Kaveo saves the result as a new file, or replaces the original if you ask. Nothing is re-encoded, so the picture and the sound stay as they were. ![The editor panel under a paused video: a start and an end marked on the playback bar, Set start and Set end with their times, the line saying where the copy really starts, and Save a copy](../images/watching/edit-a-copy-panel.webp) ## How to use it 1. Right-click the picture and choose **Edit a copy…**, or press **T**. From the library, right-click a video and choose **Edit a copy…**. 2. Where the copy should start, click **Set start** or press **I**; the same with **Set end** and **O**. You can also type a time, such as 1:15. 3. Turn it or **Remove the sound** if you want; the player shows the result. 4. Click **Save a copy**. It is saved beside the original, with *(edited)* in its name. ## Good to know - A copy starts on the nearest keyframe before your mark, shown in the panel. **Exact start** begins on the very frame by re-encoding with an FFmpeg already on your computer: slower, with a tiny loss of quality. - Turning works for MOV and MP4, and for any file with **Exact start**. - **Save in…** puts the copy in another folder. - **Replace the original…** deletes the original and puts the edited video in its place. It asks first and cannot be undone. MOV and MP4 files need no free space for it; others need room for a moment, and Kaveo says how much. - Two buttons in the panel move it under the picture or beside it. --- ## Copying to the clipboard URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/watching/copy-to-clipboard/ ## What it is for Copy the picture on screen, without the controls or the subtitles, or one of your own photos, into a document or a message — or copy your own photos and videos as files. ![The player's right-click menu over a video of your own: Copy frame under Save frame, then Copy file](../images/watching/save-a-frame-menu.webp) ## How to use it ### The picture on screen 1. Pause on the moment you want. 2. Right-click the picture and choose **Copy frame**, or press **Ctrl+C**. 3. When a message says the frame is copied, paste it where you want it. ### One of your own photos 1. Right-click its card, or the photo in the viewer, and choose **Copy image** — or press **Ctrl+C** in the viewer. 2. **Copy file** copies the file instead; a Live Photo's motion goes with it. ### One of your own videos 1. Right-click the picture while it plays, or its row on its folder's page, and choose **Copy file**. 2. Paste it into a folder or a message. ## Good to know - A copied frame carries no date or place; a frame of your own video [saved](save-a-frame.md) keeps them. A copied video keeps everything, because it is the file itself. - On Linux a very large picture, such as a 4K frame or a phone photo, is copied smaller, and the message gives both sizes. - **Copy file** is only for the photos and videos of a [personal category](../library/personal-videos.md), and not for a ripped disc. Neither entry is there for a private title, a video playing from a server, or a trailer. --- ## Media keys and the desktop URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/watching/media-keys/ ## What it is for While a title plays, your desktop knows it: the keyboard's media keys play, pause and skip, and the desktop's media controls — the media widget, the lock screen, a phone paired with the computer — show its name and picture. ## How to use it 1. Start a film, an episode or a track. 2. Press the keyboard's play/pause key, or its next and previous keys, even with Kaveo's window in the background. 3. Or use the desktop's media widget: it shows the title, its poster and where you are, and you can drag its bar to move through the title. 4. To keep the title off the desktop, turn off **System media controls** in [Settings › Interface](../settings/interface.md). ## Good to know - Next and previous follow the same list as the player's own buttons; see [Next episode and queue](next-episode.md). - Stop ends the title. The widget's shuffle and repeat buttons are Kaveo's own, wherever the playback bar shows them. - A private title is shown like any other while it plays. Available on Linux for now. --- ## Opening a web address URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/watching/open-a-url/ ## What it is for Play something that is not on your disk: a video file or a stream on the web, or a page with a video on it, such as YouTube's. ![The Open URL dialog over the library, its field holding a YouTube address, with Cancel and Play](../images/watching/open-a-url.webp) ## How to use it 1. Click **Open** › **Open URL…** in the top bar, or press **Ctrl+L**. An address you copied is already in the field. 2. Click **Play**. A page takes a few seconds to read; **Cancel** stops it. 3. To change how sharp it plays, right-click the picture and choose **Quality**; it goes on from where it was. 4. The address joins **Recently played**, and opens from there where you left it. ## Good to know - A live stream has no seek bar and shows **LIVE**; it is never resumed. - When an address cannot be played, Kaveo says why and what to do — for a site that wants you signed in, choose your browser under **Site cookies** in [Metadata](../settings/metadata.md). - The sharpness it starts at is set under [Behaviour](../settings/behaviour.md). From a terminal, see [Command line](../command-line.md). --- ## When the graphics card stops responding URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/watching/graphics-card/ ## What it is for Now and then a graphics card stops responding for a moment — a driver timeout. Kaveo recovers from it by itself instead of closing. ## How to use it There is nothing to do. The window goes still for a few seconds, then: 1. The first time, the video opens again where you were, with the same settings, and *Kaveo recovered and resumed where you were* appears. 2. If it happens again within ten minutes, Kaveo returns to the library instead. Your position is saved: open the title to resume. 3. A third time within ten minutes, Kaveo closes with a message, *The graphics card keeps failing*. ## Good to know - Sometimes Kaveo has to restart itself to use hardware decoding and the upscaler again. It reopens the video where you were and says *Kaveo restarted after the graphics card stopped responding*. ![The film playing again after a restart, with the notice "Kaveo restarted after the graphics card stopped responding." in the top-right corner](../images/watching/graphics-card-notice.webp) - After a restart, a video from a server or a private title is not reopened: open it from the library. - If it keeps happening, try playing without the neural upscaler, update the graphics driver and check the displays connected to the computer. - On an X11 desktop Kaveo always recovers by restarting: the window closes and opens again. --- # Subtitles ## Subtitles URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/subtitles/ Most of this starts from the **Subtitles** submenu, and its **Tools**: right-click the picture while a video plays. Online search, translation and the **Position** setting are set up first in **Settings › Subtitles**. - [Loading subtitles](load.md) — a file beside the video, a track inside it, or a file on your server. - [Finding subtitles online](online-search.md) — search OpenSubtitles for a subtitle in your language. - [Syncing subtitles](sync.md) — move a subtitle onto the right timing. - [Resyncing a whole series](resync-all.md) — fix every episode's timing at once. - [Subtitle delay](delay.md) — shift every line while you watch, and keep that timing. - [Writing and editing subtitles](edit.md) — create a subtitle, fix its lines and timing, or delete one. - [Saving a subtitle](save.md) — write your changes to a file. - [Position and style](position-and-style.md) — move a line, change fonts and colours, or place every subtitle. - [Translating subtitles](translate.md) — translate a subtitle with an AI model. - [Translating a whole series](translation-queue.md) — queue a film, a season or a series. - [Subtitles from OpenSubtitles for a series](translation-queue-online.md) — download them in your language, or English to translate from. - [Following the translation queue](translation-queue-panel.md) — see how far it is, pause it, and retry what failed. - [Choosing a translation model](choosing-a-model.md) — quality, cost and speed of each kind. - [Better translations](translation-quality.md) — names, speakers, style, and lines that do not fit. - [Translating on your own computer](local-models.md) — use Ollama or LM Studio, and let Kaveo listen to the film. --- ## Loading subtitles URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/subtitles/load/ ## What it is for Play a subtitle file beside the video, a track inside it, or a file on your Jellyfin server. A file you pick, or a track you extract, becomes your own copy to sync, edit or translate. ![The Subtitles menu: Off, the video's own tracks with German playing and More (5), a French file under Beside the video, then Timing, Search online… and Tools, numbered 1 to 4](../images/subtitles/load-menu.webp) 1. **Off**. 2. A track inside the video. 3. A subtitle file beside it. 4. **Tools**, where *Extract from this file* is. ## How to use it 1. While the video plays, right-click the picture, open **Subtitles** and pick a track under **In this file** (past five, under **More**) or a file under **Beside the video**. 2. To add a file, save an SRT, ASS or WebVTT file beside the video with a name starting with the video's own, such as *Film (2016).ita.srt*. 3. To pull a track out, open **Tools** › **Extract from this file** and click it. Kaveo reads the whole video, then lists the result under **Beside the video**. ## Good to know - A picture-based track, as on most Blu-rays, cannot be extracted: its row is greyed. - On a Jellyfin title, the server's files are under **Subtitle files on the server**: click one to add it, or its bin to delete it from the server at once. Copied one there yourself? See [New files on a server](../sources/server-scan.md). - A private title plays only the tracks inside its video. - If a file shows broken accents (*è* instead of *è*), **Subtitles** › **Tools** offers **Fix accented letters**; **Undo the accent fix** puts it back. --- ## Finding subtitles online URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/subtitles/online-search/ ## What it is for When no subtitle exists beside the video or inside it, Kaveo can search OpenSubtitles for one in your language. ![Settings › Subtitles › Online search with its four rows empty: API key, Languages, Account and Password with Test account beside it, and Downloads today not known yet, under the note that the key is enough to search and downloading also needs an account](../images/subtitles/online-search-settings.webp) ## How to use it ### Set it up 1. Open **Settings › Subtitles › Online search**. 2. Paste the key from your OpenSubtitles profile, under API Consumers, into **API key**. 3. In **Languages**, list language codes separated by commas, most wanted first. 4. Fill in **Account** and **Password** with your OpenSubtitles sign-in. 5. Press **Test account** to check the name, password and key, then **Save**. **Downloads today** shows what is left and when the count restarts. If your computer has no password store, a line under the key and the password says they are kept only until you restart. ### Search 1. Right-click the picture, open **Subtitles** and choose **Search online…**. 2. To narrow the list, type release words or a language code into the *Filter by release, group, quality…* box. 3. Click a result, then **Use this** — or double-click it. Kaveo downloads the subtitle, puts it on screen and adds it under **Beside the video**. ## Good to know - The key alone is enough to search; **Use this** also needs the account. - For a language OpenSubtitles lacks, Kaveo also searches the older opensubtitles.org, whose files need no account. - The key and password go to the credential store only when you press **Save**. - Some files online have broken accents (*è* instead of *è*). Kaveo repairs them when it downloads them; for one downloaded earlier, use **Fix accented letters** under **Subtitles** › **Tools**. --- ## Syncing subtitles URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/subtitles/sync/ ## What it is for A subtitle made for another edit, such as a TV broadcast, can drift out of time. Line it up against a video track, or pin two lines by hand. ![Re-sync against, the first row of Tools, highlighted, with the video's own tracks listed beside it: ger, eng, spa, fre, ita, dut, pol, por, rus and vie, each marked subrip](../images/subtitles/sync-reference.webp) ## How to use it ### Line it up against a track 1. With a subtitle file on screen, right-click the picture, open **Subtitles** › **Tools** and point at **Re-sync against**. 2. Pick any track, even a picture-based one. ### Read what it would change ![The proposal: Re-sync French (TV timing), Lined up against eng · subrip, Speed +4.27% · made for another frame rate, Lines moved 26, by +4.39 s to +25.65 s, Match 100%, with Cancel and Apply](../images/subtitles/sync-dialog.webp) 1. Kaveo reads the whole video and shows what it would change. 2. Click **Apply** or **Cancel**. ### Pin two lines by hand 1. In the subtitle editor, click a line near the start. 2. Play to where it should appear and press **Pin this line here**. 3. Repeat near the end, then press **Fit the speed to the two pins**. ## Good to know - The subtitle you are syncing must be a file, so a track inside the video has to be extracted first — see [Loading subtitles](load.md). The reference can be any track, including a picture-based one. - **Re-sync against** is missing on a video with no subtitle tracks; the pins work there. On a Jellyfin title only a text track can be the reference. - **Apply** cannot be undone, and a high match only means the lines overlap the reference, not that each one landed right. **Undo** reverses a speed fit while the editor stays open. - To fix a whole season or series at once, see [Resyncing a whole series](resync-all.md). --- ## Resyncing a whole series URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/subtitles/resync-all/ ## What it is for Subtitles made for another release of a show drift, or jump after a cut scene. Kaveo can check every episode of a season or a series against its own video and fix what is off, while you do something else. ## How to use it 1. Open the **⋯** menu of a series, a season, a film or an episode and choose **Resync subtitles…** (on a season, **Resync this season's subtitles…**). 2. Read the dialog and click **Resync**. Do it again on another series to queue that one too. 3. Follow it in the subtitle queue's panel, from the badge in the top bar. ## Good to know - Each subtitle is compared with a subtitle track of the video, or with what is said in the audio when a transcriber is set up in **Settings › Subtitles**. It is moved only when the match is certain. - Kaveo corrects its own copy. Your subtitle files and your videos are never changed. - What it could not place is left as it was and listed under its episode: click **Open episode** and sync it by hand, as in [Syncing subtitles](sync.md). - **Restore previous sync** puts a corrected subtitle back as it was. Edits made since are lost. - A title only on a Jellyfin server is compared with the server's text subtitles, or with its audio. Its picture subtitles cannot be used there. --- ## Subtitle delay URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/subtitles/delay/ ## What it is for When every line of a subtitle is early or late, shift them all at once while the video plays. ## How to use it 1. Right-click the picture, open **Subtitles**, and point at **Timing**. 2. Click the 50 ms or 500 ms buttons until the lines match the speech: a plus value shows them later, a minus value earlier. **Reset** returns to zero. 3. Or press **Z** and **X** for 50 ms steps, **Shift+Z** and **Shift+X** for 500 ms. The value shows in the top-right corner. ### Keep the timing beyond this video 1. **Apply to the whole series** makes it the starting timing for this show's subtitles in the same language. It needs an episode of a series in your library; if unavailable, its tooltip says why. 2. **Apply to the subtitle file…** writes it into the subtitle, and into the file you saved it to, so other players get it too — see [Saving a subtitle](save.md). Kaveo asks first. ## Good to know - Each subtitle keeps its own timing: another track or the next episode starts at zero unless you applied it to the series, and an episode you already adjusted keeps its own. - Writing needs a subtitle file, not a track inside the video: use **Tools** › **Extract from this file** first; the extracted file keeps the delay. Afterwards the delay reads zero, since the file carries it. - A private title does not remember its delay. --- ## Writing and editing subtitles URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/subtitles/edit/ ## What it is for Fix a subtitle's timing or words against the film, or write a new one. ![The All lines… page: Back and the subtitle's name marked only in Kaveo, with Put in time order, Undo, Redo, Save as… and Save; a Find box with Only translated lines and Only lines that do not fit, and a count of 60 lines; Break the row (7) and Give time (3); a note that this subtitle has no styles table, with Convert to ASS; Names and terms (0), Who is speaking (0), and How this title should sound with its Natural, Literal and Keep honorifics presets and a free-text box; then the first lines of the subtitle, each with its number, its start and end, and its words](../images/subtitles/edit-all-lines.webp) ## How to use it ![The subtitle editor under the picture: the playback bar on top, then Editing en marked only in Kaveo, with Follow the film, Undo, Redo, All lines…, Done, Save as… and Save; Start = now and End = now, the four nudges, This line and all after → now, Add a line here, Remove this line and Pin this line here; the lines around the one on screen, which is highlighted; and on the right the Look column with This line, Style and Every subtitle, greyed because SubRip cannot carry a position or a font, above Convert to ASS](../images/subtitles/edit-panel.webp) 1. With a subtitle file on screen, right-click the picture, open **Subtitles** › **Tools** and choose **Edit subtitles…**, or press **E**. 2. Click **Start = now [** or **End = now ]**, or press **[** or **]**, to set the line's start or end to the frame on screen. **↑** and **↓** move between lines. 3. Click in the line's box to change its words — **Shift+Enter** starts a new line — then press **Enter** or click outside it. 4. Click **All lines…** to correct lines in a list. 5. Or choose **Write one from nothing…** in **Subtitles** › **Tools** to start with one empty line. ## Good to know - A track inside the video has to be extracted first — see [Loading subtitles](load.md). - Kaveo keeps your changes as you go; other players see them once you save the subtitle — see [Saving a subtitle](save.md). - While the panel is open, the playback bar is its top row. Drag the panel's top edge for more lines or more picture. - On the **All lines…** page, a line added from the audio has its times in colour, and **Only lines from the audio** shows just those. - To remove a subtitle Kaveo keeps, click its bin under **Beside the video**; Kaveo asks first. A file you put beside the video yourself, or saved, is never changed. --- ## Saving a subtitle URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/subtitles/save/ ## What it is for Kaveo keeps every change to a subtitle as you make it, but no other player sees it until you save it somewhere. ![The Save as dialog: A new file beside the video with its path, Overwrite the original with the path of the file it came from, and A file on this computer…, then Cancel and Save](../images/subtitles/save-as.webp) ## How to use it 1. In the subtitle editor or on the **All lines…** page, click **Save**, or press **Ctrl+S**. The first time, Kaveo asks where. 2. Choose **A new file beside the video**, **A new file on the server** for a Jellyfin title, **Overwrite the original**, or **A file on this computer…**, then click **Save**. 3. **Save as…**, or **Ctrl+Shift+S**, picks another place. Both are also in **Subtitles** › **Tools**. ## Good to know - After the first time, **Save** writes to the same place. - Overwriting asks first. With **Keep a backup copy** ticked, **Restore the original** in **Subtitles** › **Tools** puts the old file back. - On a server, Kaveo removes the original and uploads the new file under its name. If the upload fails, the original goes back. - Syncing, the delay written into the file and an accent fix save again where you saved. - Removing a subtitle in Kaveo never deletes a file you saved. --- ## Position and style URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/subtitles/position-and-style/ ## What it is for Move a subtitle line, change how a style looks, or move every subtitle at once. ![The Styles section of an ASS subtitle, open on its one style, Default: Font, reading Arial with a red not installed beside it, then Size, a Text and an Outline colour, Outline width, Shadow, Bold, Italic and Margins L/R/V](../images/subtitles/position-and-style-styles.webp) ## How to use it ### Place and style a line 1. Only ASS can be placed and styled, so for an SRT or WebVTT file first click **Convert to ASS** in the editor or on **All lines…**. Kaveo plays an ASS copy; the original stays. 2. In the editor's **Look** column, click a cell of the *Place* grid, type **X** and **Y**, or drag the line on the picture; below, set its **Font**, **Size**, **Colour**, **Outline**, **Shadow**, **B** or **I**. *this line* marks a value of its own; the button after it gives it back to the style. 3. Pick **Style «Default»** instead of **This line** to change every line of that style. 4. On **All lines…**, **Styles** lists every style, with margins and transparency. ### Move every subtitle ![Settings › Subtitles › Appearance: Style override on Off (keep the script's typeset), and Position with its grid of nine cells and As the file says selected](../images/subtitles/position-and-style-settings.webp) 1. Pick a cell under **Position** in **Settings › Subtitles › Appearance** and click **Save**. **As the file says**, then **Save**, undoes it. The editor's **Every subtitle** edits the same setting, with its own **Save**. ## Good to know - The editor's preview draws a line in the typeface the player will use; its outline and effects are close, not exact. - A style change reaches the picture when you click **Back**. - If a style change does nothing, set **Style override** in **Settings › Subtitles › Appearance** back to **Off (keep the script's typeset)**. - A red *not installed* beside a font means this computer lacks it, and the player draws another. --- ## Translating subtitles URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/subtitles/translate/ ## What it is for Translate a subtitle with an AI model, online or on your own computer. Each line keeps its timing. ![Settings › Subtitles › Translation set up for Ollama (local): Provider, Endpoint, Model with translategemma:12b and 3 models found, Translate into on Italiano, Read the original audio, Re-read the translation, Already translated set to Ask, and an empty API key that this server does not need, numbered 1 to 4](../images/subtitles/translate-settings.webp) 1. **Provider**. 2. **API key**. 3. **Model**. 4. **Translate into**. ## How to use it ### Set up a provider 1. In **Settings › Subtitles › Translation**, choose a **Provider**, or **Other…** and type its **Endpoint**. 2. Paste the **API key** if it needs one, and pick or type a **Model**. 3. Choose a language in **Translate into**, such as Italian, and press **Save**. If your computer has no password store, a line under the key says it is kept only until you restart. ### Translate ![The progress panel over the player, reading Translating to Italian — 30 of 60 lines, with a half-filled bar, a Cancel button, and under them Block 2 of 2, how long the reply in flight has been waited for, and how long the last one took](../images/subtitles/translate-progress.webp) 1. With a subtitle file on screen, right-click the picture and open **Subtitles** › **Tools**. 2. Choose **Translate to Italian…**, named after your **Translate into** language, or **Translate while I watch** to start where the film is. ## Good to know - A track inside the video has to be extracted first — see [Loading subtitles](load.md). Which model to pick: [Choosing a translation model](choosing-a-model.md). - A panel at the top of the player shows the progress, with **Cancel**; the result is added under **Beside the video**. - Lines that still fail after Kaveo retries are left in their original language. - While the [translation queue](translation-queue.md) works, the player offers to pause it. - Turn on **Re-read the translation** for a second pass that corrects mistranslated lines. It helps with a large model; with a small one on your own computer it can add as many mistakes as it fixes. --- ## Translating a whole series URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/subtitles/translation-queue/ ## What it is for Translate the subtitles of a film, a season or a whole series in one go, without opening the video. Kaveo works through them one episode at a time. ![The dialog Translate the subtitles of “Sintel”: the film, where its text comes from, the estimate of time and cost, and the Cancel and Translate buttons](../images/subtitles/translation-queue.webp) ## How to use it 1. Right-click a film, an episode or a series and choose **Subtitles…**. On a film or series page it is in **⋯**; a season has its own **Subtitles for this season…**. 2. Check the episodes, where their text comes from, and the estimate of time and cost. 3. If some already have a translation, choose **Skip them** or **Translate them again**. 4. Press **Translate**. ## When an episode cannot be translated Kaveo translates from English text. If an episode's English subtitles are only pictures (PGS), or missing, the dialog says so with a warning and does not queue it. ![The dialog for the series Morevna: cannot be translated, no English subtitles, what to do, a note that an OpenSubtitles key would let Kaveo look online, and the Translate button turned off](../images/subtitles/translation-queue-blocked.webp) Put an English text subtitle beside the video, with the same name ending in *.en.srt*, or find one with **Search online…** in the player. On Jellyfin, add it on the server. Then try again. ## Good to know - To follow or retry what is queued, see [Following the translation queue](translation-queue-panel.md). - Online: [OpenSubtitles for a series](translation-queue-online.md). - On a new series, keep **Stop after the first episode** ticked, check that episode, then press **Continue** in the queue: the next episodes use your corrections. - A playing video gets the graphics card first. - Jellyfin titles can be queued too; a title in both places shares its subtitles. Set up a provider: see [Translating subtitles](translate.md). --- ## Subtitles from OpenSubtitles for a series URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/subtitles/translation-queue-online/ ## What it is for When you translate a film, a season or a series, Kaveo can look for its subtitles on OpenSubtitles first. A subtitle already in your language costs nothing to download. English found online lets Kaveo translate an episode that has no English here. ## How to use it 1. In **Settings › Subtitles**, enter your OpenSubtitles key, user name and password. 2. Open **Subtitles…** as usual. The dialog says *Searching OpenSubtitles…* for a moment. 3. If your language exists online, choose **Download them (no translation, no cost)** or **Translate anyway**. 4. Open **Each episode** to change what a single episode gets. 5. Press **Translate**. ## Good to know - English from OpenSubtitles is checked against the episode's audio before it is translated. A subtitle that belongs to another episode is not used, and the episode says so. - Without a speech transcriber it is marked *not checked against the audio*. - Any download, even in your language, is re-timed to your copy first; with no subtitles in the video, through the same release's English. If Kaveo cannot be sure, it marks it *sync uncertain*. - Lines the audio has and the downloaded English lacks are added from the speech transcriber's words before translating, and marked. Check them on the **All lines…** page. - Downloads count against your OpenSubtitles daily allowance. Searching does not. When it runs out, the episodes that need a download wait and continue by themselves when it comes back; the panel shows the time and what is left. Everything else goes on. --- ## Following the translation queue URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/subtitles/translation-queue-panel/ ## What it is for Watch and steer the subtitles waiting to be translated, after you have queued them — see [Translating a whole series](translation-queue.md). ## How to use it The top bar shows the queue's progress, for example *Translating 3/9 · 42%*. Click it to open the queue. ![The Translation queue, paused with two left: a series that needs you, with a Continue button and its episodes, a failed film with a retry button, a film waiting, a ⋯ on each, and the Resume, Clear finished and Close buttons](../images/subtitles/translation-queue-panel.webp) - **Pause** stops after the request in progress; **Resume** goes on from there. Both sit at the top, beside the queue's status. - A series' **⋯** holds **Move to the front**, **Move up**, **Move down** and **Remove this series from the queue**; episodes keep their order. - The cross cancels the episode in progress; the bin removes an episode. - The round arrow translates an episode again, or retries one that failed. ## Good to know - The top bar shows nothing when the queue is empty, or when everything in it went well. - The top bar is not shown in the player: go back to the library to see it. - A running queue continues when Kaveo starts again. - An episode marked in red needs you: hover over it to see why and what to do. - A line under a finished episode names a style whose font is missing, or cannot draw some letters of your language. Press **Use another font for this style…** to pick an installed font that draws them all. Nothing changes until you do. - A grey line under a finished episode counts the lines added from the audio. Press **Review them…** to see only those, and delete any that is not dialogue. --- ## Choosing a translation model URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/subtitles/choosing-a-model/ ## What it is for Pick a translation model for the quality you want and the price you accept. ## How to use it 1. In **Settings › Subtitles › Translation**, choose **OpenRouter** as **Provider** and paste its **API key**. 2. In **Model**, type part of the model's name and pick it from the list. 3. Turn on **Re-read the translation** only with Claude Sonnet 5.5, then press **Save**. ## Which model - Claude Sonnet 5.5 with **Re-read the translation**: the fewest mistakes on the hard lines, such as who is a man or a woman. About 5–10 lines to correct an episode; 0.88 $ an episode, 11 $ for 13 episodes, 23 $ for 26. - DeepSeek V4.1 Flash: about 5–10 lines; two minutes and 0.03 $ an episode, under 1 $ for 26. The best value. - Kimi K3: about 10 lines; 0.34 $ an episode, 9 $ for 26. - Gemini 2.5 Flash: about 20 lines; under two minutes an episode, 0.05 $. - A local model in Ollama: about 35 lines; free, and nothing leaves your computer. ## Good to know - Measured in October 2026 on one 45-minute anime episode, English into Italian, against a translation corrected by hand. Prices and models change. - Grok took over half an hour for one episode. DeepSeek V4 Pro and V4 Flash made more mistakes than V4.1 Flash. --- ## Better translations URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/subtitles/translation-quality/ ## What it is for Tell Kaveo, before it translates, how to spell names, who is speaking and how the result should sound. ![Names and terms, holding Franck and Victor, each spelled the same way, with Add a term; Who is speaking, holding Victor and Franck, both marked he, each with a note on how they speak, and Add a person; and How this title should sound with Natural, Literal and Keep honorifics, its box holding the Natural note](../images/subtitles/translation-quality-lists.webp) ## How to use it 1. With the subtitle you translate from on screen — not an earlier translation — press **E** and click **All lines…**. 2. Open **Names and terms**, click **Add a term**, and write each name as it appears and how to write it. 3. Open **Who is speaking**, click **Add a person**, type the name and pick **she**, **he** or **not sure**. 4. Under **How this title should sound**, click **Natural**, **Literal** or **Keep honorifics**. 5. Click **Back** to keep them, then translate. ## Good to know - Kaveo proposes names, terms and speakers you did not describe, even when the subtitle names nobody; subtitles in other languages inside the video help it tell a man from a woman. - The next episodes in the same folder reuse your names, speakers and style, add the ones each episode introduces without changing yours, and reuse a line you corrected wherever it returns. New lines can still need fixing. - Lines that do not fit can be fixed on the translation's **All lines…** page: **Break the row** and **Give time** change no word. --- ## Translating on your own computer URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/subtitles/local-models/ ## What it is for Translate on this computer, and let Kaveo listen to the film's original audio. ![The Model field emptied, with Ollama's list under it: Installed here, then three models, each with its size](../images/subtitles/local-models-installed.webp) ## How to use it ### Use a local model 1. On Linux, click **Install** on **Local AI (Ollama)** in [Components](../settings/components.md): Kaveo installs Ollama and a model that suits your graphics card, and starts it when needed. Or install Ollama or LM Studio yourself, with a model. 2. In **Settings › Subtitles › Translation**, choose **Ollama (local)** or **LM Studio (local)** as **Provider**. 3. Clear **Model** to see Ollama's models under *Installed here*, with their sizes; pick one and press **Save**. ### Listen to the film ![The Choose a model menu open under Read the original audio, which reads no model: Browse…, then Download one with eight whisper.cpp models from large-v3, 2.9 GB and recommended, down to tiny, 74 MB](../images/subtitles/local-models-transcriber.webp) 1. Click **Install** on the speech transcriber's row in [Components](../settings/components.md): Kaveo picks the build for your graphics card and fetches a model with it. A whisper-cli you installed yourself works too. 2. To change the model, at the end of the **Read the original audio** row, after the path field, click the list button (**Choose a model**) and pick, browse to or download a model. 3. Press **Save** once the row reads *ready*. ## Good to know - Kaveo listens to a video on this computer before translating it, on the processor when a film keeps the graphics card busy, which takes about as long as the episode; a second translation reuses it. - With Ollama, a model that loads while a film is open can end up on the processor, much slower, and stays there until Ollama unloads it. --- # Sources ## Sources URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/sources/ Kaveo gathers titles from folders on your computer and from media servers, and shows them together in one library. - [Local folders](local-folders.md) — the folders Kaveo scans for films, series and music on this computer. - [Jellyfin](jellyfin.md) — connect a Jellyfin server, play its titles, and keep your progress in sync. - [New files on a server](server-scan.md) — make a server list a file you copied there yourself. - [When a server moves](server-moved.md) — give Kaveo a server's new address without losing its categories. - [Leaving files out](leave-out.md) — keep folders and files out of the library, by rule or with a marker file. --- ## Local folders URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/sources/local-folders/ ## What it is for The folders Kaveo scans on this computer, for films, series and music. Their titles appear under *All* and under no category — to file a folder under *Movies* or *Series*, add it to that category instead, see [Categories](../library/categories.md). ![Settings › Library › Folders, with one folder under Library folders: its full path, Normalize… and the cross that removes it, and Add folder… below](../images/sources/local-folders-settings.webp) ## How to use it 1. Open **Settings › Library › Folders** — each folder is listed under **Library folders**, with its full path. 2. Click **Add folder…** and choose another folder to scan. 3. Click the cross (**Remove**) beside a folder to stop scanning it, or **Normalize…** to rename what is in it — see [Tidying a folder](../organizing/tidy-a-folder.md). 4. Click **Save** — the scan runs then, not before; **Revert** puts the list back. ## Good to know - Removing a folder touches no file on disk and asks nothing: its titles leave the library, and its *Recently played* cards stay. Right-click one and choose **Remove from Recently played**, or clear them all with **Clear history…** under **Settings › Library › Folders** ([Library](../settings/library.md)). - Kaveo takes video files, and audio files as music; samples and bonus material are left out, and so is anything you leave out yourself — see [Leaving files out](leave-out.md). - Nothing needs rescanning by hand — a new file appears on its own, about ten seconds later. On a network folder Kaveo cannot watch, it appears the next time Kaveo starts. --- ## Jellyfin URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/sources/jellyfin/ ## What it is for Kaveo plays a [Jellyfin](https://jellyfin.org/) server's films, series and [music](../watching/listen-to-music.md), and syncs your place. ![A connected server on the Sources page: Demo Server with the JELLYFIN badge, a green dot beside its address, chips counting its titles and libraries, and Reconnect beside Remove](../images/sources/jellyfin-connected-card.webp) ## How to use it ### Connect a server ![The connect wizard's connection step: the Name and Server URL fields, the Quick Connect and Username & password choice, and Back, Cancel and Start Quick Connect](../images/sources/jellyfin-connect-form.webp) 1. Click **Sources** in the top bar, then **Connect a server** and **Jellyfin**. 2. Pick a server Kaveo found on your network, or type its address in **Server URL**; until it has one, **Start Quick Connect** and **Connect** stay dimmed. 3. Choose **Quick Connect**, click **Start Quick Connect**, and enter the code in your Jellyfin dashboard — or **Username & password** and **Connect**. 4. Map each of the server's libraries to **New category**, one of your categories, or **Don't import**. 5. Click **Done**. The server's titles join your library. ### When a server stops working ![A server card whose server is silent: a red dot beside its address, the No answer chip, and Reconnect beside Remove](../images/sources/jellyfin-no-answer.webp) ![A server card whose sign-in no longer works: a red dot beside its address, the Credentials refused chip, and Reconnect beside Remove](../images/sources/jellyfin-credentials-refused.webp) 1. The **Sources** page gives every server a card saying what is wrong: *No answer* if the server is silent, *Credentials refused* if the sign-in no longer works. Either way it contributes no titles. 2. Click **Reconnect**, sign in if asked, and it lists each library and its category. New address? See [When a server moves](server-moved.md). ![The reconnect dialog once the server has answered: its address, The saved credentials still work., and under Libraries a row for Films and one for Shows, each saying which category it is in, with Done](../images/sources/jellyfin-reconnect-libraries.webp) ## Good to know - Your place and favorites travel both ways while Kaveo runs; watched travels only from the server. - Server changes missing? Click **Reload** on **Sources**. - **Remove** asks first, then forgets the server and its sign-in and drops a category left empty. - If your computer has no password store, the **Sources** page says so: sign-ins are kept only until you restart, and every server then asks you to **Reconnect**. --- ## When a server moves URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/sources/server-moved/ ## What it is for A server whose address changes — a new router, a new IP — stops answering at the old one. Kaveo keeps every category the server fed; it only needs the new address. ![Reconnect for Demo Server: the Server URL field with the address Kaveo has, the sentence saying nothing answers there, the hint to type the new address above, and Try again beside Cancel](../images/sources/server-moved-reconnect.webp) ## How to use it 1. Click **Sources** in the top bar. The server's card says *No answer*. 2. Click **Reconnect**. Kaveo tries the old address and says nothing answers there. 3. Type the new address in **Server URL** and click **Try again**. Kaveo checks that it is the same server, and its titles come back. Connecting it again from **Connect a server** works too: Kaveo recognises the server, updates its address and keeps its categories. ## Good to know - An address with no scheme and no port gets Jellyfin's usual ones: *10.0.0.5* becomes *http://10.0.0.5:8096*. - If the server answers only with the other scheme, Kaveo says so and offers that address. - A server listed twice, at its old and its new address, becomes one entry as soon as the new one answers: its titles stop appearing twice, and a message says which address Kaveo kept. - *Checking…* on a card means Kaveo is still asking the server; a large library can take a minute. --- ## New files on a server URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/sources/server-scan/ ## What it is for A file you copy onto your Jellyfin server yourself, such as a subtitle beside an episode, stays invisible until the server looks for it. Kaveo can ask the server to look. ## How to use it 1. For one title, right-click its card or click **⋯** on its page or its episode row, and choose **Scan for new files on the server**. On a series it covers every episode. 2. While an episode plays, right-click the picture and open **Subtitles** › **Tools** › **Look for new subtitle files on the server**. Kaveo waits up to half a minute and says how many new files appeared. 3. For everything, click **Scan libraries** on the **Sources** page. ## Good to know - Only a Jellyfin administrator account can ask for a scan; any other account is told so. - The library updates by itself when the server finishes. **Reload** only asks the server again for what it already lists. --- ## Leaving files out URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/sources/leave-out/ ## What it is for Some folders hold things that are not for the library — a download still in progress, a folder of trailers, a film you keep but do not want listed. Kaveo can leave them out of every scan. ![Settings › Library › Folders, scrolled to Left out of the scan: one excluded film folder with the cross that removes it, the Leave out a folder… and Leave out a file… buttons, three rules, and what the last scan left out](../images/sources/leave-out-settings.webp) ## How to use it 1. Open **Settings › Library › Folders** and scroll to **Left out of the scan**. 2. Click **Leave out a folder…** or **Leave out a file…** and choose it — or right-click a title's card and choose **Exclude from library…**. 3. Or write rules under **Rules**, one per line: *\*.part* leaves out every partial download, *Trailers/* every folder with that name. 4. Click **Save** — the library is scanned again, without them. ## Good to know - Nothing on disk changes, and a file left out still plays when you open it directly. - A folder holding a file named *.ignore* or *.nomedia* is left out too — the marker Jellyfin, Emby and Kodi read, so one file works for all of them. - The rules hold for your download folders as well: a file left out is never imported. --- # Organizing files ## Organizing files URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/organizing/ Kaveo can name your files for you, file your finished downloads into your libraries, and keep more than one copy of a title. - [Naming templates](naming-templates.md) — choose how Kaveo names your files and folders. - [Tidying a folder](tidy-a-folder.md) — rename what is already in your library to match your templates. - [Download folders](download-folders.md) — file finished downloads into your libraries. - [Fixing an import](fix-an-import.md) — answer what Kaveo could not work out before anything moves. - [Several copies of a title](versions.md) — keep more than one copy of a film or episode. --- ## Naming templates URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/organizing/naming-templates/ ## What it is for Naming templates describe the layout Kaveo renames files into — on import, and when you tidy a library folder. ![Settings › Library › Naming: the Available tokens panel open above the Standard, Plex and Kodi presets, the Options rows, and the Movies and TV Series templates each with the name it renders](../images/organizing/naming-templates-page.webp) ## How to use it ### Set your templates 1. Open **Settings › Library › Naming**. A preset — **Standard**, **Plex** or **Kodi** — replaces every field except **Music naming**, the **Anime** ones included. 2. Edit a template under **Movies**, **TV Series** or **Music naming**: click in a field, then click a token under **Available tokens** to add it to the end. 3. Under **Options**, set **Colon replacement**, **Episode title language** (**English** or **Same as the interface**) and **Use dots instead of spaces**. 4. Click **Save**. *The naming templates changed* then offers **Show me what would change** — a preview across your whole library — or **Not now**. ![The naming templates changed: the message saying the titles already in your library still carry the old names and that nothing moves until you confirm, with Not now beside Show me what would change](../images/organizing/naming-templates-offer.webp) ### Name anime differently ![The Anime group: Season folder, Episode file, Movie folder and Movie file all empty under the line that says an empty field names anime like everything else, with the anime episode preview below them](../images/organizing/naming-templates-anime.webp) 1. Under **Anime**, fill in **Episode file (anime)** — for example **{Series Title} - {episode:00}**. 2. Leave the other three empty to name anime like everything else, then click **Save**. ## Good to know - A token is typed exactly as shown, such as **{Movie Title}**; wrap a part in another pair — **{ ({Release Year})}** — to write it only when its token has a value. - **{Quality Full}** turns a release's own words into one name, such as *Bluray-1080p*: the source is read from the file's name, then its folder, and the picture size is measured from the file. - With a TMDB API key (**Settings › Metadata**; [Metadata](../settings/metadata.md)), titles are filed under their official English names rather than the ones read from the files. --- ## Tidying a folder URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/organizing/tidy-a-folder/ ## What it is for A new naming template is never applied to what is already in your library. Tidying brings a folder in line, and shows you the list before anything moves. ![The Normalize library preview: 5 to move, 0 already organized, 0 conflicts above Select all and Select none, then ticked rows each carrying a file name, its size, Fix… and the name it would be given, with Cancel and Apply (moves files on disk) at the foot](../images/organizing/tidy-a-folder-preview.webp) ## How to use it 1. Click **Normalize…** beside a library folder in **Settings › Library › Folders**, or beside a category's folder in **Settings › Library › Categories**; for one film right-click its card, for one episode its row on the series page, and choose **Rename / normalize…**. 2. Kaveo reads any file it has not seen before (*Preparing the preview*); **Cancel** stops it, and nothing has moved. 3. In the *Normalize library* list, untick a row to leave it out, or use **Select all** / **Select none**. 4. Click **Fix…** beside a row Kaveo read wrong, correct it, then click **Re-plan**. 5. Click **Apply (moves files on disk)**. ## Good to know - Subtitles, artwork and the NFO file travel with the rename, and so do the title's saved position, its card in *Recently played*, and your corrections. - A file Kaveo could not place is listed as a conflict with its reason; see [Fixing an import](fix-an-import.md) for the ones you can answer. --- ## Download folders URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/organizing/download-folders/ ## What it is for Kaveo files finished downloads into your libraries, named by your [templates](naming-templates.md). A download folder is an input only: Kaveo does not scan it as a library folder, and anything still downloading stays behind. ![The Download folders group in Settings: the Downloads card with Import…, the Move and By content type combos and an unticked Auto, and Add download folder… below it](../images/organizing/download-folders-settings.webp) ## How to use it ### Add a download folder 1. In **Settings › Library › Folders**, under **Download folders**, click **Add download folder…**. 2. On its card, choose **Move** or **Hardlink (keep original)** and where the files go — **By content type**, or one category if this folder always feeds the same library. 3. Click **Save** — nothing on the card counts until you do. ### Import what is in it ![The import window: one file under Need you and two under Ready to import, each with a still, its size, its date and where it will be filed, the Goes to bar below them, and Later and Import 2 at the foot](../images/organizing/download-folders-preview.webp) 1. Click **Import…**, then **Preview** if Kaveo asks where each kind goes. 2. Each file shows where it will be filed. Answer any under *Need you* — see [Fixing an import](fix-an-import.md) — then click the **Import** button at the foot. ## Good to know - **Hardlink (keep original)** keeps your torrent client seeding, but only within one drive: a file it cannot link is skipped, not copied. - Kaveo never overwrites a file already at the destination; a file it cannot name waits under *Need you* instead. - **Later** closes the window and moves nothing. - Tick **Auto** and click **Save** to import with no preview. A file Kaveo cannot identify stays behind, and a message offers **Review…**, or **Don't ask again** to stop being told about it. --- ## Fixing an import URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/organizing/fix-an-import/ ## What it is for Kaveo does not guess. A file it cannot name waits under *Need you* in the import window, and nothing moves until you say where it belongs. ![The import window with the Morevna episode ticked under Need you, Anime chosen in the Goes to bar, Morevna as the series and 1 as the Season, and Assign beside them](../images/organizing/fix-an-import-conflict.webp) ## How to use it 1. Tick the files that belong together: **Shift**+click ticks a run, and a row's date ticks every file from that day. 2. Under **Goes to**, click one of your categories — or **Don't import**. 3. Answer what it asks: a folder for your own videos (**New folder** suggests a name from the dates), or the series and the **Season** for episodes. 4. Click **Assign**. The rows move to *Ready to import* and say where they will be filed. ## Good to know - **Edit** opens every detail of one file, such as a film's title and year; **Edit…** in the bar edits the ticked files together, a value written once applying to them all. - **Search** beside a title looks it up online; **Use this match** fills it in. - **Don't import** leaves files in the download folder; **Don't ask again** stops Kaveo mentioning them at the next launch. - A folder you name here is created only when you import. - **{MediaInfo …}** tokens are read from the file: check that FFprobe is installed. - Samples and bonus material are never imported, and a file still downloading is left out. --- ## Several copies of a title URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/organizing/versions/ ## What it is for The same film or episode can exist twice — two releases, or a local file and the same title on your Jellyfin server. Kaveo keeps them as one title with several versions, and remembers the kind you prefer. ![The Sources chips on a film's title page: Automatic selected, then Local · 1080p · Sprite Fright (2021).webm and Local · 1080p · WEBDL · DEMO, under the Play, Trailer, My list and Favorite buttons](../images/organizing/versions-sources.webp) ## How to use it 1. Open the list: the chips under *Sources* on a film's title page, or the versions button on an episode's row, for example **2 versions**. 2. Each copy says where it is (*Local*, or Jellyfin and the server's name), its resolution, and what tells it apart — where the release came from and its release group, or the file name. Rest the pointer on a copy to see its file, or its server's address. 3. Click the copy you want: that selects it, it does not start it. 4. Click **Play** on a film's page, or an episode's row, to open it. ![An episode's versions menu, open under its 2 versions button: Automatic selected above the episode's two copies, Local · 1080p · Morevna - S01E03.mp4 and Local · 1080p · DemoSubs](../images/organizing/versions-menu.webp) ## Good to know - A film on your disk and the same film on a server are one card, not two; with only one copy there is no list to open. - Your choice is remembered for the title — for a series that means every episode of it, and it still holds the next time you open the show. - Choose **Automatic**, first in the list, to forget your choice and go back to the best copy. --- # Private titles ## Private titles URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/private/ Kaveo can keep some titles in a **vault**: encrypted on disk, and, while it is locked, not in your library at all. - [Setting up private titles](set-up.md) — choose where they live and set a password. - [Hiding a title](hide-a-title.md) — make a title private. - [Hiding a photo](hide-a-photo.md) — make one of your own photos private, its Live motion with it. - [Taking a title back out](take-a-title-out.md) — turn a private title back into an ordinary file. - [Locking and unlocking](lock.md) — unlock private titles, lock them again, and change the password. --- ## Setting up private titles URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/private/set-up/ ## What it is for Before you can hide anything, Kaveo needs a vault: a folder to keep hidden titles in, and a password to lock it with. ![The Set up your vault dialog: Vault folder with a folder already filled in and Choose folder… under it, the empty Password and Confirm password fields, the Generate a recovery key checkbox, and Cancel beside a greyed-out Create vault](../images/private/set-up-dialog.webp) ## How to use it 1. Click the padlock icon in the top bar. With no vault yet, it opens **Set up your vault**. 2. **Vault folder** is filled in for you if you already have a library folder — keep it, or pick another with **Choose folder…**, on the same drive as your films so hiding a title later is instant instead of a copy across drives. 3. Fill in **Password** and **Confirm password**, tick **Generate a recovery key**, then click **Create vault** — grey until a folder is set and the two passwords match. 4. Write down the recovery key — shown once, with **Copy** to put it on the clipboard — then tick **I have written it down** and click **Done**. ## Good to know - Your password is never stored, not even as a hash. Without it and without the recovery key, nothing inside can ever be opened again — nobody can reset it for you. - The recovery key unlocks the vault on its own, independently of the password, so keep it somewhere safe. --- ## Hiding a title URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/private/hide-a-title/ ## What it is for Make a local title private — encrypted where it sits, and out of your library while the vault is locked. ![The file half of a card's menu: Open containing folder, Edit a copy…, Rename / normalize…, Make private…, Exclude from library…, and under a separator Delete file from disk…](../images/private/hide-a-title-menu.webp) ## How to use it 1. [Unlock the vault](lock.md), then right-click the card of a local film or episode and choose **Make private…**. 2. Check the path, then click **Make private**. 3. For a file that is not in your library, open the padlock menu and choose **Make a file private…**. 4. Drop a video into your private folder (set one under **Private folder** in **Settings › Library › Folders**) and Kaveo hides it once the copy finishes; while the vault is locked, the files wait. ![The confirmation asking to move the title into the vault: the film's full path, what will happen to it, and Cancel beside Make private](../images/private/hide-a-title-confirm.webp) ## Good to know - On the same drive the film is moved, not copied. Encrypting needs its own size again in free space, or about 16 MB to encrypt it where it lies. - The title goes in whole and comes back whole: subtitles, NFO, *-trailer* file and pictures named like it, its poster, description and cast, your tags, **My list**, **Favorite** and playlists. What a visible title shares stays. A file that cannot go in stays put; the message counts them. - A film's [saved frame](../watching/save-a-frame.md) stays in Pictures, under the film's name, once the film is hidden. - If Kaveo closes during a hide, your next unlock finishes it or puts the film back, and says so. - You can take it back out, byte for byte, with a valid [licence](../getting-started/licence.md) — see [Taking a title back out](take-a-title-out.md). --- ## Hiding a photo URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/private/hide-a-photo/ ## What it is for Make one of your own photos private — encrypted, and out of your library while the vault is locked. A Live Photo's motion goes in with it. ![A Live Photo's menu on its folder's page: Open containing folder, Copy image, Copy file, Export a copy…, and Make private… at the bottom](../images/private/hide-a-photo-menu.webp) ## How to use it 1. [Unlock the vault](lock.md), then right-click a photo on its folder's page and choose **Make private…**. 2. Check the path, then click **Make private**. 3. Or drop the photo into your private folder: Kaveo hides it, and the video of the same name beside it as its motion. ![The confirmation asking to move the photo into the vault, its path, and that its Live motion goes with it](../images/private/hide-a-photo-confirm.webp) ## Good to know - While the vault is unlocked, the photo stays in its folder at its date, and opens in the viewer as before — its motion too. A slideshow leaves it out. - Its picture is never kept anywhere unencrypted, not even its small preview: Kaveo makes it again after each unlock. - A private photo offers no copies. Take it back out to copy or export it — see [Taking a title back out](take-a-title-out.md); it comes back with its motion and its dates. --- ## Taking a title back out URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/private/take-a-title-out/ ## What it is for Undo hiding: the film is decrypted back to a normal file, checked byte for byte against what went in, and stops being private. ## How to use it 1. [Unlock the vault](lock.md) — a hidden title has no card until you do — then right-click its card and choose **Take out of the vault…**. 2. Check the folder the dialog shows — it is where the file came from — or click **Change folder…** to put it somewhere else. 3. Click **Take out**. The top bar shows how far it has got, and a close button beside it stops it. ## Good to know - Taking a title out needs a valid [licence](../getting-started/licence.md). - Nothing leaves the vault until the check passes: stopping it, or a failure, leaves the title private and intact. - Kaveo never writes over a file, never uses your private folder — anything left there is made private again — nor a folder that would not keep the pictures' dates, as some network shares do. Pick another folder. - The subtitles, the NFO file and the pictures that went in come back out beside the film, and its watched mark and your place in it come back with them. A picture keeps its name, or is numbered, as in *(2)*, when that name is taken. - The film and its pictures come back with the dates they had — except a film made private by an older version of Kaveo, which is dated the day it comes out. --- ## Locking and unlocking URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/private/lock/ ## What it is for The vault locks itself after a while so you do not have to remember, and its password can be changed without touching the films inside. ![Settings › Vault with the vault unlocked: Lock by itself set to 15 minutes, the Also stop a hidden title that is playing switch, off, and Password and recovery key offering Change password… and New recovery key…, both ready to click.](../images/private/lock-settings.webp) ## How to use it ### Locking 1. Open the padlock menu and choose **Lock now** to lock immediately — if a film is on screen Kaveo asks first: playback carries on, but every hidden title leaves the library around it. 2. Or leave it: the vault locks itself after 15 minutes idle by default — playing a title counts as activity, so it never locks in the middle of one. ### Unlocking 1. Click the padlock and type your **Password** — or click **Use recovery key instead** and give the key. 2. Click **Unlock**. Your private titles are back in the library. ### Changing your password 1. Unlock the vault, then open **Settings › Vault** ([Vault](../settings/vault.md)) and click **Change password…** — it is greyed out while the vault is locked. 2. Enter your current password (or your recovery key), the new password twice, then click **Change password**. ## Good to know - Your recovery key still works after a password change — it opens the vault on its own. To retire it, unlock the vault, click **New recovery key…** and give your password or the old key; the old one stops working at once. - Set **Lock by itself** to 0, in **Settings › Vault**, to turn the timeout off. - Locking is built against someone browsing your library or files, not against forensic recovery of the drive. --- # Settings ## Settings URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/settings/ Kaveo's settings are split into a section per subject, listed down the left of the screen, and this group has one page for each of them. - [Saving changes](saving.md) — when changes are kept. - [Library](library.md) — folders, categories, naming, history. - [Metadata](metadata.md) — TMDB key and cookies. - [Vault](vault.md) — the vault's own preferences. - [Audio](audio.md) — output, passthrough, downmixing. - [Subtitles](subtitles.md) — appearance, translation, online search. - [Behaviour](behaviour.md) — offering to skip openings, and the format of a saved frame. - [Picture](picture.md) — colour, aspect, zoom, panning. - [Upscaler](upscaler.md) — enlarging, sharpening, neural models. - [Display & HDR](display.md) — HDR, tone mapping, refresh. - [Rendering](rendering.md) — decoding and frame delivery. - [Interface](interface.md) — language, themes, hover previews. - [Shortcuts](shortcuts.md) — keys and mouse buttons. - [Diagnostics](diagnostics.md) — logs, recordings and bundles. - [Components](components.md) — what Kaveo uses on this computer. - [Backup](backup.md) — save and restore your settings, history and subtitles. - [About](about.md) — the version you run. --- ## Saving changes URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/settings/saving/ ## What it is for Every settings page shares one Save and Revert bar, so you always know whether a change is only on screen or already kept. ![The bar across the bottom of the settings screen after one option was changed: it reads Unsaved changes — preview only, with Revert and Save live at the right-hand end.](../images/settings/saving-bar.webp) ## How to use it 1. Open a settings page — what you change takes effect right away, so you can see the picture, the sound or the language change as you go. 2. Click **Save** when you are happy with it. Nothing reaches disk before that. 3. Click **Revert** to put things back the way they were — every unsaved change, not only this page's. 4. If you leave with something unsaved — the back arrow, the top bar, the quick panel over the player, or closing Kaveo — you are asked to **Save**, **Discard**, or **Stay**. ## Good to know - Not everything waits for **Save**. On **Settings › Library**, **Categories** applies and rescans at once and **Clear history…** empties the list — **Revert** undoes neither. Nor does an action on your files or the outside world wait: importing, **Recatalogue library**, connecting a server, **Start recording** and **Export a diagnostic bundle** all happen the moment you click. The one switch that does not wait is **File manager integration**, on [Interface](interface.md); and no row at all on [Diagnostics](diagnostics.md) waits. - The quick panel over the player (**Ctrl+H**) shows some of the same settings, with the same Save/Revert bar. - See [Diagnostics](diagnostics.md) for logs, recordings and a bundle to send when something goes wrong. --- ## Library URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/settings/library/ ## What it is for **Settings › Library** holds what is in your library and what it is called. Its three sub-pages — **Folders**, **Categories** and **Naming** — appear in the rail and as tabs across the page. ![The settings rail with Library selected and its four sub-pages under it — Folders, Categories, Naming and History — repeated as tabs above the Folders page's first group](../images/sources/local-folders-settings.webp) ## How to use it 1. Open **Settings › Library › Folders** for the folder groups: **Library folders** ([Local folders](../sources/local-folders.md)), **Download folders** ([Download folders](../organizing/download-folders.md)), **Private folder** ([Hiding a title](../private/hide-a-title.md)) and **Adult content** ([Hiding adult content](../library/adult-content.md)). **Normalize another folder…**, beside **Add folder…**, tidies one you pick — [Tidying a folder](../organizing/tidy-a-folder.md). 2. Open **Categories** for libraries of your own, with their folders and content kinds — [Categories](../library/categories.md). 3. Open **Naming** for the groups **Options**, **Movies**, **TV Series**, **Anime** and **Music naming**, the **Standard**, **Plex** and **Kodi** presets and the **Available tokens** reference — [Naming templates](../organizing/naming-templates.md). 4. At the foot of **Folders**, **Clear history…** empties *Recently played* once you confirm; it is greyed out with nothing to clear. ## Good to know - Two things do not wait for **Save**: **Categories** applies and rescans at once, and **Clear history…** empties the list once confirmed. **Revert** undoes neither. - Clearing the history cannot be undone, but it does not forget where you stopped in a film. --- ## Metadata URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/settings/metadata/ ## What it is for **Settings › Metadata** holds the key that fetches posters, plots and genres, and the button that fetches them all again. ![Settings with Metadata chosen in the rail: an empty TMDB API key field, the note that genre rows need a key, Anime on AniList on, Artist pictures online on, Downloaded artist pictures with Clear, Album information online on, Downloaded album information with Clear, and Lyrics online on](../images/settings/metadata.webp) ## How to use it 1. Paste your key into **TMDB API key** and click **Test**: it says *Key works* or what is wrong. 2. Click **Save** to keep it: nothing is stored before you save. 3. When a trailer or web video asks you to sign in, sign in with your browser, then choose it under **Site cookies** (and **Browser profile**, if it has several). **Test** checks that Kaveo can read it; if not, choose **cookies.txt file…**. 4. Music, online by default: [Artist pictures](../library/artist-pictures.md), [Album information](../library/album-information.md), [Lyrics](../watching/lyrics.md). 5. **Anime on AniList** (on by default) asks AniList about an imported anime TMDB lacks, or its adult tag. 6. Click **Recatalogue library** to fetch every poster, plot and genre anew. ## Good to know - **Recatalogue library** acts at once; **Revert** does not undo it. - Kaveo reads the cookies only when a video needs them, and keeps no copy. On Windows, Chrome, Edge and Brave cannot be read; Firefox can, once closed. - On Linux, Chrome or Vivaldi take about 3 seconds to read, Firefox under one; *python-pycryptodomex* (Arch) or *python3-pycryptodomex* (Fedora) makes them as fast. - With no key, only the genre rows stay empty: see [Genres and tags](../library/tags.md). - A wrong poster or plot is corrected on the title: see [Correcting a wrong match](../library/correct-a-match.md). --- ## Vault URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/settings/vault/ ## What it is for **Settings › Vault** holds the vault's own preferences. It does not create one — the padlock in the top bar does — and an existing vault cannot be moved from here. ![Settings with Vault chosen in the rail: Vault folder reading No vault yet with a Create vault… button, Lock by itself at 15 minutes, Also stop a hidden title that is playing off, and Change password… and New recovery key… greyed out above Unlock the vault to change either one.](../images/settings/vault.webp) ## How to use it 1. **Vault folder** shows where the encrypted files are, read-only; it reads *No vault yet*, with **Create vault…** beside it, until you [set one up](../private/set-up.md). 2. Set **Lock by itself** to how many minutes the vault waits before locking itself: 15 to begin with, and 0 means never. 3. Turn on **Also stop a hidden title that is playing** to have that lock stop the film too; it starts off, since a film already on screen is not a further leak. 4. Click **Save** — both of those wait for it, like every other value; see [Saving changes](saving.md). ## Good to know - Under **Password and recovery key**, **Change password…** and **New recovery key…** need the vault unlocked, and say so. Either change is kept as soon as its dialog says it is done: no **Save**, and nothing for **Revert** to put back. See [Locking and unlocking](../private/lock.md). - *Vault folder not reachable*, in red, means the drive it lives on is not mounted. --- ## Audio URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/settings/audio/ ## What it is for **Settings › Audio** decides where the sound goes, how special formats reach it, and which soundtrack a film opens on. ![Settings with Audio chosen in the rail: Play audio on, Exclusive output off, Bitstream passthrough on, DSD output with its note that DSD is converted to PCM here, and Downmix to stereo on Automatic](../images/settings/audio.webp) ## How to use it 1. **Exclusive output** with a chosen **Audio output device** is bit-perfect, bypassing the mixer. 2. **Bitstream passthrough** sends Dolby and DTS to a receiver untouched. 3. **DSD output**: how DSF and DFF files reach a DAC; as DSD only to a chosen **Audio output device** with **Exclusive output** on. 4. **Downmix to stereo**: **Automatic** folds only for an output narrower than the film (an HDMI receiver is asked). 5. **Volume control** on **Output device** keeps the sound bit-perfect below 100 % ([Volume and dynamics](../watching/volume-and-dynamics.md)). 6. **Sync offset for this output** corrects a late output, like Bluetooth headphones. 7. **Preferred audio languages**: **Add language**, best first; drag to reorder. 8. **Keep pitch when changing speed**: off, faster sounds higher, like a tape. ## Good to know - Choose **DoP (DSD over PCM)** only for a DAC that decodes it: others play noise. While DSD goes to the DAC, volume, the equalizer, crossfade and the visualizer do not apply. - A sample rate the device lacks is converted, and Kaveo says so. - A title opens on the first of those languages it has, unless its series has one; never on a commentary or an audio description. - Pinning a device other than HDMI makes **Automatic** downmix stand down; **Use a different setting for this output** gives it a rule. - Everything waits for **Save** ([Saving changes](saving.md)). --- ## Subtitles URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/settings/subtitles/ ## What it is for **Settings › Subtitles** decides whether subtitles are drawn and how they look, and holds the credentials that translate or fetch them. Its three sub-pages — **Appearance**, **Translation** and **Online search** — appear in the rail and as tabs. ![Settings with Subtitles chosen in the rail and its three sub-pages listed under it, repeated as tabs above the Appearance page and its one-line description: Render subtitles on, Preferred languages with Add language and none chosen yet, Forced captions only off, Style override on Off (keep the script's typeset), and Position on As the file says](../images/settings/subtitles.webp) ## How to use it 1. **Appearance** holds **Render subtitles**, which switches the rest of the tab on and off; **Preferred languages**, which choose a track until you pick one yourself (drag to reorder); **Forced captions only**, for signs and foreign dialogue; **Style override**; and **Position** — see [Position and style](../subtitles/position-and-style.md). 2. **Translation** holds **Provider**, **Endpoint**, the **API key** with **Test**, **Model**, then **Translate into** (**Other…** takes a typed name), **Read the original audio**, **Re-read the translation** and **Already translated** — see [Translating subtitles](../subtitles/translate.md) and [Translating on your own computer](../subtitles/local-models.md). Names and speakers are set on the subtitle — see [Better translations](../subtitles/translation-quality.md). 3. **Online search** holds OpenSubtitles' **API key**, **Languages**, **Account**, **Password** and **Test account** — see [Finding subtitles online](../subtitles/online-search.md). ## Good to know - **Style override** on **Off (keep the script's typeset)** draws no styling rows; **Size only** adds **Text size**; and **Font, colour, outline and shadow** keeps that one and adds four more — **Font family**, **Text colour**, **Outline width** and **Shadow depth**. - **Appearance** is read when a title opens, so a change made while a film is on screen reloads it briefly, in place. - Everything here waits for **Save**, the two keys and the password included — see [Saving changes](saving.md). --- ## Behaviour URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/settings/behaviour/ ## What it is for **Settings › Behaviour** holds three rows: the one thing the player does by itself, offering to skip a series' opening or ending, the format of a frame you save from the player, and how sharp a video opened from a web address plays. ![Settings with Behaviour chosen under Playback in the rail, and the section's three rows — Offer to skip intros and endings, on, Saved frames with JPEG chosen, and Web video quality on Automatic](../images/watching/skip-intro-setting.webp) ## How to use it 1. **Offer to skip intros and endings** is on to begin with. See [Skipping openings](../watching/skip-intro.md) for what the button does. 2. **Saved frames** is **JPEG** to begin with; choose **PNG** for pictures that lose nothing. See [Saving a frame](../watching/save-a-frame.md). 3. **Web video quality** is **Automatic** to begin with: the sharpest the stream offers, up to your screen's height. Choose a height to cap it there; the player's right-click **Quality** menu changes it for the video playing. 4. Click **Save** to keep a change — see [Saving changes](saving.md). ## Good to know - Some photo apps read a picture's date only from a JPEG, and show none for a PNG frame. --- ## Picture URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/settings/picture/ ## What it is for **Settings › Picture** covers the picture as a whole: its colour, and where and at what shape it is drawn. ![Settings shown on the Picture section: the rail listing all sixteen sections with Picture selected first under Video & display, and beside it Colour adjustment — Brightness at 0.00, Contrast, Saturation and Gamma at 1.00, Hue at 0°, Colour LUT (.cube) on None with Choose…, and Reset colour — then Picture placement — Aspect ratio on From the file, Pan and scan at 0.00, Zoom at 1.00×, Pan horizontally and Pan vertically at 0.00, and Reset placement.](../images/settings/picture.webp) ## How to use it 1. Under **Colour adjustment**, move **Brightness**, **Contrast**, **Saturation**, **Hue** and **Gamma**; **Reset colour** returns all five to neutral. 2. **Colour LUT (.cube)** applies a grading look from a file you pick with **Choose…** — a look, not screen calibration. The cross beside the file and a **LUT interpretation** list appear once one is set. 3. Under **Picture placement**, set **Aspect ratio** — **From the file** to begin with — when a film is drawn at the wrong shape. 4. Raise **Pan and scan** to trade black bars for cropped edges and **Zoom** to enlarge; **Pan horizontally** and **Pan vertically** shift the picture inside the window. **Reset placement** undoes all five. 5. Click **Save** to keep any of it — see [Saving changes](saving.md). ## Good to know - They re-grade; they do not repair a compressed or banded source — that is the Upscaler section's **Source** tab. - **Pan horizontally** and **Pan vertically** move the picture whether or not anything is cropped: where there are black bars it slides into them, and otherwise it slides off one edge, leaving black behind it. **Reset placement** brings it back. - Nothing is kept until **Save**, though a film on screen follows every change at once, resets included. --- ## Upscaler URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/settings/upscaler/ ## What it is for **Settings › Upscaler** is the picture pipeline — four of its tabs are the order things happen to a frame: repaired, enlarged, shrunk, finished. The neural upscaler is one of its choices, not a switch above it. ![Settings, Upscaler selected in the rail with its Source, Upscaling, Downscaling, Output and Advanced sub-items. Beside it the caption How the picture is rebuilt at a higher resolution, the five tabs with Upscaling chosen, a Status row reading Passthrough — the neural upscaler is not running, then Picture enlargement with Stop using the net at and Luma upscale, Colour (chroma) with Chroma upscale, the two closed folds Filter shape — luma (advanced) and Filter shape — chroma (advanced), Sigmoidal upscaling on, and Neural strength with Strength at 1.00 and a note saying it has no effect while the net is not the active upscaler. The Edge halo limiter heading closes the picture; the tab carries on below it, Render scale with it.](../images/settings/upscaler.webp) ## How to use it 1. **Status**, under the tabs, says what the net is doing; unconfigured it reads *Passthrough — the neural upscaler is not running*. 2. On **Upscaling**, under **Picture enlargement**, set **Luma upscale** to **Neural model** to turn the net on; **Content type** picks its family; **Stop using the net at** skips sources that already fill your display. 3. Below sit **Chroma upscale**, **Sigmoidal upscaling**, **Strength**, **Limit edge halos** and **Render scale**. 4. Every tab holds more rows than this page names: **Source** cleans the file (**Reduce banding**, **Sharpness**, **CAS**, **Line darkening**), **Downscaling** fits an oversized source, **Output** finishes it (**Anti-ringing**, **Deinterlacing**, **Output dithering**), and **Advanced** holds the model files and, under **Engine**, **Execution provider**. 5. Click **Save** to keep it — see [Saving changes](saving.md). ## Good to know - The net needs a model file: **Base model**, **Anime model** and **Live-action model**, on **Advanced**. While it is not the active upscaler, **Strength** and **Limit edge halos** say so underneath and stay editable. Their note calls the picker Image upscale, a row that no longer exists. - The first play after a model or provider change is slower — **Status** reads *Optimizing for your GPU…*. - [Picture](picture.md) covers colour and placement; [Rendering](rendering.md) the decoder and frame delivery. --- ## Display & HDR URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/settings/display/ ## What it is for **Settings › Display & HDR** decides what your screen is sent, and how an HDR film is fitted to it. ![Settings, Display & HDR selected in the rail with its HDR output, Tone mapping and Format & refresh sub-items. Beside it the Output group — HDR output on Auto, Use HDR on SDR content off, Display peak on Auto with a note that both apply live — and Signal & calibration with Mastering peak, Mastering black and Calibration LUT. The three tabs and the Per-display settings group are above the picture.](../images/settings/display.webp) ## How to use it 1. **Editing settings of**, under the three tabs, picks the screen the page edits; **Create a profile for this display**, **Copy values from** and **Delete profile** manage them. 2. **HDR output** holds **Output**: **HDR output**, **Use HDR on SDR content** — off, so only an HDR film switches the screen, see [HDR output](../watching/hdr.md) — and **Display peak**; then **Signal & calibration**: **Mastering peak**, **Mastering black** and **Calibration LUT**, which corrects the screen; grading is [Picture](picture.md). **Override** in a value's menu sets your own. 3. **Tone mapping** holds **SDR tone-map target**, **SDR tone-map black**, **Tone-map curve**, **Gamut mapping**, **HDR metadata**, **Contrast recovery** and **Inverse tone mapping**, then **Dynamic tone-mapping (peak detection)**: **Peak detection**, **Peak percentile**, **Smoothing period**, **Scene-change threshold (low)** and **Scene-change threshold (high)**. 4. **Format & refresh** holds **Output (bit depth & gamut)**: **Bit depth**, **Output range**, **Output gamut**, **Display gamma**; **Display refresh**: **Match refresh to content**, **Refresh policy**; **Presentation**: **Lighter presentation**, **Full brightness in fullscreen**. ## Good to know - A screen with no profile uses **Global (displays without a profile)**; a saved one returns when the player moves to that screen, and one Kaveo cannot identify gets none. - Nothing is kept until **Save** — see [Saving changes](saving.md) — which is also when the screen switches into or out of HDR. --- ## Rendering URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/settings/rendering/ ## What it is for **Settings › Rendering** is the machinery under a film rather than its look: which decoder opens it, and how finished frames reach the screen. ![Settings shown on the Rendering section: the rail listing all sixteen sections with Rendering selected last under Video & display, and beside it the line Changes apply live — some briefly reload the video, then Decode — Decoder on Hardware (NVDEC/…), Strict decoding off, and Zero-copy decode off with its note that it falls back automatically when unavailable — then Presentation — Frame mixer on Oversample (smooth) and Vertical sync on Auto — and the Queues fold closed.](../images/settings/rendering.webp) ## How to use it 1. Under **Decode**, leave **Decoder** on **Hardware (NVDEC/…)**; **Software** is slower but opens anything, and there is a Vulkan decoder too. 2. Turn on **Strict decoding** to refuse a file the decoder cannot handle, rather than quietly fall back. 3. **Zero-copy decode** saves a little bandwidth and starts off. 4. Under **Presentation**, **Frame mixer** starts on **Oversample (smooth)**; **Nearest (no blend)** invents no frames, and every other entry blends them — frame interpolation. 5. Leave **Vertical sync** on **Auto** unless you see tearing or stutter, then **Save** — see [Saving changes](saving.md). ## Good to know - **Zero-copy decode** is switched off for you while the neural upscaler runs, and the switch still shows whatever you set. - **Queues** folds away four expert settings, in frames, for how far ahead Kaveo decodes and presents; on Windows **Presentation** has one row more, **Exclusive fullscreen** (experimental). - Every row waits for **Save**; a change made while a film plays reopens it where you were. --- ## Interface URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/settings/interface/ ## What it is for **Settings › Interface** covers how Kaveo looks and behaves, and whether it appears in your desktop's menus and media controls. ![Settings shown on the Interface section: the rail listing all sixteen sections with Interface selected under App, and beside it Language on English, App theme and Player theme on Dark, Colour from the cover on, the accent swatches on Theme's, Interface size 100 %, Text size Default, Control size Compact, Hover preview on Clip from the video, Trailer quality and language, and Featured background on Gradient rather than the default Title artwork, above the Player group's heading.](../images/settings/interface.webp) ## How to use it 1. Pick a **Language**: **English**, **Italiano**, **Français** or **Español**. 2. Choose an **App theme** for the library and a **Player theme** for what surrounds a film, from **Dark** (the default), **Light**, **Pure black (OLED)**, **High contrast**, **Warm night** and **Indigo**. **Colour from the cover** tints a song's screen; **Light** and **High contrast** stay plain. 3. Pick an **Accent colour**, an **Interface size**, a **Text size** and a **Control size**. 4. Set **Hover preview** to **Clip from the video** or **YouTube trailer**; a server's title always plays its trailer. 5. Set **Trailer quality** and **Trailer language**; see [Trailers](../library/trailers.md). 6. Choose a **Featured background** — **Title artwork** is the default; see [The library home](../library/home.md). 7. Leave **System media controls** on for the media keys; see [Media keys and the desktop](../watching/media-keys.md). Turn on **File manager integration** to put Kaveo in your desktop's right-click menus; see [From your file manager](../file-manager.md). 8. Turn off **Seek bar previews** to show only the time and chapter. 9. Set **Slideshow interval** per photo; see [Slideshow](../library/slideshow.md). ## Good to know - Every row but **File manager integration** waits for **Save**; the language, the themes, **System media controls** and **Seek bar previews** change at once; **Revert** undoes them. - That one acts at once, and **Revert** does not undo it. --- ## Shortcuts URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/settings/shortcuts/ ## What it is for **Settings › Shortcuts** lists the player's actions with the keys and mouse inputs that trigger them, and is where you change them. What each action ships with is [Keyboard shortcuts](../keyboard-shortcuts.md). ![Settings shown on the Shortcuts section: the rail with Shortcuts selected under App, and beside it the line Each action can have several shortcuts. Esc always exits fullscreen., then the Playback group — Play / Pause on Space, Seek forward 10 s and Seek backward 10 s each carrying a key, a mouse button and a wheel notch, Frame step forward and backward, Speed up and down — and the first rows of the Sound group: Volume up and down, Mute and Cycle audio track, each key with its own cross and a plus to add another.](../images/settings/shortcuts.webp) ## How to use it 1. Each row is one action this platform has, with its shortcuts beside it, in five groups — **Playback**, **Sound**, **Subtitles**, **Picture & window**, **Tools**; what they do is [Player controls](../watching/player-controls.md). 2. Click **Add** on a row — it asks you to *press a key or mouse…* — and press what you want. **Cancel**, or **Esc**, backs out. 3. Click the cross beside a shortcut to drop it: an action can hold several, so the rest stay. 4. **Reset to defaults**, at the bottom, puts every action back to what it shipped with. 5. Click **Save** to keep any of it — see [Saving changes](saving.md). ## Good to know - A key or button belongs to one action: give it to another and it is taken from the first, with no warning. - A shortcut can be a mouse button or a wheel notch (**Wheel ↑**) as readily as a key, and it may carry **Ctrl**, **Shift** or **Alt**. - Four actions arrive with no shortcut at all. **Esc** and **F12** are not in the list because they work on every screen, not only over a film. --- ## Diagnostics URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/settings/diagnostics/ ## What it is for **Settings › Diagnostics** is where Kaveo says what it is doing, and where to find the pieces a bug report needs. ![A band across the top of the Diagnostics section: the settings rail on the left, cut below Behaviour, and beside it the Logging group — Detail level on Normal — problems only, Record performance and Time each GPU pass both off, an empty Extra filter rules field showing only its faint example, and In force naming the rules that apply. The rest of the section carries on below the picture.](../images/settings/diagnostics.webp) ## How to use it 1. Under **Logging**, raise **Detail level** — **Normal — problems only**, **Detailed — what the app did**, **Debug — for reporting a bug**, **Everything — including the video libraries** — while you chase something, then set it back; it applies at once, with no restart. 2. Turn on **Record performance** when playback stutters — a few lines a second while a video plays; **Time each GPU pass** goes further, needs that one on too, and is not free. **Extra filter rules** raises one part of Kaveo on its own. 3. **Log files** names where they go: one file a day, the last ten kept, each line tagged with its launch. 4. Under **Diagnostic session**, click **Start recording**, reproduce the problem, then **Stop recording** — a file with just that, not a whole day's log. 5. Click **Export a diagnostic bundle** for one zip to send, then **Show the file** to find it; **Control from outside** is for driving Kaveo from a script. ## Good to know - A bundle holds the recent logs, any crash reports and your machine's details; your library folders, servers and lists are left out, your home folder and user name removed, and the zip lists what it left out. - Nothing here waits for **Save** — each row acts and is kept at once, and **Revert** does not undo it. --- ## Components URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/settings/components/ ## What it is for **Settings › Components** shows what this computer has, what Kaveo uses of it — video libraries, the upscaler's runtime, the speech transcriber, a local AI, FFmpeg tools, OCR — and what is missing. ![Settings shown on the Components section: This computer naming the graphics card, then What Kaveo uses with one row per component and its state, and the Integration heading, whose rows follow further down.](../images/settings/components.webp) ## How to use it 1. Read **This computer**: the graphics card every recommendation is made for. 2. Read each row of **What Kaveo uses**: the copy in use or the one recommended, and the steps to fix what is not possible. 3. Click **Install** where offered: Kaveo installs the build that suits this computer, with the model it needs, and tries it first. 4. Click the list button at the end of a row for its choices: a copy already on the computer, Kaveo's copy in another build, **Leave it out**, or **Back to the default**. 5. After installing a driver or a program, click **Detect again**. 6. Under **Integration**, turn on **Command in the terminal** to start Kaveo by typing kaveo — see [Command line](../command-line.md). ## Good to know - A choice is kept at once, without **Save**; some take effect the next time Kaveo starts. An installed component is used at once. - If a download fails or does not run here, the copy you had stays in use. - When a newer build of Kaveo's copy is out, its row offers **Update to** it. - **Video decoding libraries** are Kaveo's own unless you choose this computer's or a folder of your own; if those do not work, Kaveo keeps its own and says why under the row. --- ## Backup URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/settings/backup/ ## What it is for A backup keeps what you built in Kaveo — settings, categories, corrected titles, history, resume points, your volume, your playlists, the translation queue and your subtitles — in one file you can keep safe or carry to another computer. ![Settings shown on the Backup section: the rail with Backup selected under App, and beside it the App data row with a Create backup button, the Backup file row with a Restore button, and the Back up automatically switch, off.](../images/settings/backup.webp) ## How to use it 1. Open **Settings**, then **Backup**. 2. Choose **Create backup…** and pick where to save the file. 3. To bring one back, choose **Restore…** and pick the file. 4. Check the date and version it shows, then choose **Restore and restart**. ## Good to know - Passwords, keys and server sign-ins are never in a backup: after a restore, sign in again. Your videos are not in it either. - A restore replaces what you have; Kaveo first moves your current state into a folder it names, so it can be undone by hand. - The list of private titles on this computer is never replaced by an older one from a backup. --- ## About URL: https://kaveoplayer.com/guide/settings/about/ ## What it is for **Settings › About** shows the version you are running, whether a newer Kaveo is out, and where to report a problem or ask a question. ![Settings shown on the About section: the rail listing all sixteen sections with About selected last under App, and beside it the Version row, the Updates row with its Check automatically switch on and a Check now button, the line Not checked yet, and the Help row with Report a problem and Ask a question buttons.](../images/settings/about.webp) ## How to use it 1. **Check automatically** asks once at start and once a day; click **Check now** to ask at once. 2. When a newer Kaveo is out, a badge with its version appears in the top bar. Click **Update now**: Kaveo downloads it, checks it, closes and starts again on the new version. **What's new** shows its notes; **Later** hides the badge for that version. 3. **Report a problem…** opens the issue form on GitHub in your browser, with the version, your system, graphics card and components already filled in. **Ask a question** opens Discussions. ## Good to know - The check sends the Kaveo version and nothing else. Turn off **Check automatically** and click **Save** to stop it; **Check now** still works. - If a film is playing, the update waits until it ends. Installed with a package, Kaveo asks for your password once, as your system's own updates do. - A copy that was not installed from a release says so, and does not update itself. - A newer build of a component Kaveo installed is named here too; update it in [Components](components.md). - The report form never receives a file or folder name, and nothing is sent until you submit it there. Attach a bundle from [Diagnostics](diagnostics.md) — see [Troubleshooting](../troubleshooting.md). ---
